I know this is a topic that's been tossed around quite a bit so pardon me for bringing it up again. First of all, I've never used belts... I use a dip belt but that's not the kind I'm talking about. Yesterday, I was doing a near 1RM squat and I strained something in my back. I iced it down and am only slightly tight today so no big deal. However, I was remembering the standard recommendations that I've heard and that is to use the belt when you are doing something that is near max and might strain your lower back. My back strain in more mid-back so I don't know if a belt would have helped anyway but it prompted me to ask...

Do you use a belt? Why/why not?

NO belts here. I know they help increase intrabdominal pressure which, could increase performance. However, not using one helps build the core muslces.

I tend to go along with that line of thinking, too, which is why I never use them. Plus, I'm not going THAT heavy anyway and I work my way up to the heavier loads each time.

I have never used a belt and frankly have never found reason to use one. I have concentrated on strong core strength and good form and my back has never given me any problems. I am 55 and am doing 285's on squats and 315's on deads with no belts so far.

... and you're still my HERO! All at 170-180 body weight, right? I know you told me recently but I've slept since then. I know you aren't looking to impress but, nevertheless, I'm IMPRESSED!
