How do you do it man? I tried all week to get up at 5:00am to do HGM and Interval Training and I would say I was only successful once or twice on getting up early during the week. I am having a hell of a time doing it.
I really want to train in the morning but I'm not a morning person at all. What is the secret bro? What time do you go to bed at night? I think I read that you get up at 4:15am so how much sleep is required to function that early in the morning? Any tips you can give me would greatly be appreciated.
Just for the record I usually go to bed between 11:00pm and 11:15 and try to get up at 5:00am, which I have been unsuccessful as of lately.

It's pretty obvious, like igunick says, go to bed earlier. I've been getting up usually between 5 & 5:15am for a couple years now. My bed time is 9 pm. 9:30 at the latest. Takes some time getting used to, but the fact is that most people just sit and watch TV after 9 anyway, so I sleep. You need your 7-8 hours of sleep. After a while it won't be that difficult. I couldn't run this a.m. due to thunderstorm moving through so I slept until 6:15 and I feel like I slept in. Now I really miss my morning workouts if I don't get them in.
Discipline, that's all it is.

I have worked out at 5 am for the past 2 years, until just recently starting to workout at 5pm. I am a morning person, however, I have noticed just how much working out in the mornings drained my energy for the day. I feel a lot better if I do my cardio in the morning and leave the weights for the afternoon / evening.

LOL OG! I thought the exact same thing.
If he ever decides to wrestle professionally, or be a figure in the Bible, he's now got a name....... John, the Mauler.

Mahler (Mauler) here.
Yes, I do get up at 4:15. Have done it since I started lifting 3 1/2 years ago.
I get to bed around 9:30.
Set the clock. Kick yourself in the ass when it goes off. Make it a habit. Your life may just depend on it.
And learn to spell my screen name. Your life may just depend on that, too. LOL

If I don't do my program first thing in the morning, it doesn't get done. If you force yourself to get up and get going for a few weeks, it will become much easier.

Sorry Mahler for not spelling your name correctly. Thanks for the advice.

That is the same way I feel. Thank you so much for the advice.

I just started working out before work cus I started my summer job. I guess it's easy for me to workout early cus I am a morning person and I love to lift. Also, I make my breakfast the night before and I love eating so I look foward to my breakfast when I wake up. I have also been going to be early to make sure I get in my 7-9 hours of sleep. I guess it's just about getting into the groove a routine.

Hey,
I was just wondering for those of you who get up so early to work out, do you find that you really can't sleep in anymore, even if you tried? I've been getting up for years to work out in the morning, and it seems like no matter what I'm always up by 7:30, 8 at the latest regardless of what time I go to bed. It's like my body knows it should be getting ready to workout or something.

Hell no. Even with adequate sleep, my body could very well go back to sleep. Left to my own devices, my body shifts toward sleeping through the first half of the day and staying up late.

8 am seems very late to me these days. Of course having a 10 mo baby in the next room and a wife who likes to sleep in may have an effect on that as well. Even on the weekends I still get to bed by 10 pm at the latest and once I hit 8 hours of sleep, my back gets sore so I generally get up even if The Kid is still sleeping.
On a similar subject, and I know this should probably been in the Nutrition Forum, but what kind of pre-workout drink or meal do you guys eat and more importantly, what timing do you use. I've had a difficult time getting a decent pre-workout meal in since I started working out at home becuase there's no "travel time" to the gym to let it digest very well.
Currently, I'm doing a protein shake with Gatorade & Creatine with a scoop of vanilla protein. I drink about a 3rd when I get up then I wait about 20 mins then sip another 3rd while I workout then finish it up after.
What to you other "morning guys" do?
Thanks in advance.
Ted
