Here is the situation: My father is 75 yrs old. He has always been in good shape for his age. For the past two years or so, he has been training at a gym doing ONLY machine based resistance training. When he isn't lifting, he swims and walks.

The poor guys was in so much pain yesterday it hurt me. Apparently his trainer had him doing something that must resemble seated flys (probably a PecDec machine). I hope he did not tear his "rotator cuff).

Once your clients are strong and stable enough to use dumbbells or cable machines, would you structure a strengthening routine to match their lifestyle? Although my father could have injured himself doing a different exercise, I question the rationale of seated flys.

Your thoughts are appreciated.
