Last night I finally reached my Squat goal of 350lbs ass to grass. What a feeling it is to stick with something, push hard, and reach your goals. I know it' not huge by any means, but if you knew where I started, you'd see it was a long road...
Not even 3 months ago, I was really having Squat issues. Bad knee, couldn't go deep without balance issues, and discomfort from the bar as I was using a bar pad prior.
Last Night, 350 went up 2 times and I really feel it could have been 360 or 365.
I was thinking back last night and thought, what a great thing weightlifting can be. It's so pure! You work hard, lift weights and eat right and the body responds. Not many things in life are like that. Next stop, 400lbs...

Wow, congrats! What did you do to correct these problems? Also, what is the matter w/ using a bar pad?
Newlife,
Congratulations. Hitting a new max is so cool, especially in the squat. Just having that weight on your shoulders and then doing a full squat. I think weightlifting has a great mental training effect that even surpasses the physical training effect. Good job.

I had a kneecap tracking issue that was minor, but it still hurt at times. This is 100% gone now. For balance and deepness, I went light for about 2 weeks and really focused on form and getting below 90. I also installed a mirror centered in my cage so I could see my lift.
And last, I always used a bar pad when I went to the gym and did squats. Then I bought a house and built my gym. I started squating at home and didn't have a pad. I said screw it, and lifted without it. It hurt a bit a first as I don't have a huge back or wide shoulders so the bar was applying a lot of weight to my frame. I'm talking red marks that looked like I had been in a fight. Work on my shoulder position and bar position and it went away after 3 workouts. Now, I can imagine using one.
I think it was 50% physical and 50% mental. I knew I was going to break my record in my head and nothing was going to stop that from happening.
That is some really badass training, and Ive used the same principles for the bench press for a friend. Ive considered doing it for my squats, but I havent made a commitment to it yet. You would have to reeeeeally cut back on everything else you do (maintain like none other) so that you dont overtrain.

Any chance you have a digital camera? We should have a race to 400 lbs. Photo proof would be really cool. Anyone else want in? I just maxed and hit 365 pretty deep but not quite ATG last friday and got totally buried by 385.

Danny, No digital camera at the time, but xmas is around the corner! I would love to start taking some pics. 385 is pretty damn serious. My training buddy just put up 390 last week and the bend on the Bar was insane. He was pretty deep, I would say 90, maybe a bit deeper, but he is also 245lbs. I'm only 185...385 would buckle my knees at this point!
365 is insane Danny. Thats a # to be proud of. I know how hard you workout, and it seems to payoff. What do you push out with your suit?
I havent back squatted in a while but Im sure I can hit a deep 335. I might take up the race to 400 but Id be starting next year because Ill be doing more o-lifting. Right now my goal is a 315 front squat and its at 260 right now at 180.

Good job Newlife. The newfound strength should have you boosting huge airs now!

Newlife, no idea what I can do in the suit. I haven't used it in forever. Training has changed a bit so I had to get away from the wide stance stuff for a while to train for my first competition. I will get back into it evenutally but I would guess it won't give me more than 20 lbs.
I probably shouldn't hit it really hard on the squat training to hit 400 either. So we can do a more un-official race, just encourage each other along. 400 is a damn huge number.

Yeah an unofficial race would be cool, I want to reach my front squat goal primarily, the back squat shouldnt be that far off if I can front squat 315

Thats a huge ass front squat! Yeah, I need to work on being able to Trap bar deadlift 500 lbs for reps and viking press 275 for reps but I think I can do that and still work pretty hard on my squat. With the stance you take with a trap bar my quads get hit pretty damn hard and it seems like the increase of closer stance squatting I have done has helped a lot.

Danny, First off, nice avitar. Don't think you fool any of us with all those Kegs in the background
Last night, I returned to my squat. I am going to start a little log in the other section to keep track of where I am. I figure I will make the legal mark, below 90 for the squat to count.
I tried for 365 last night after a warm up and stalled about 3/4 of the way up. Bumped down to 355, and it went up. Finished off with 360 which is the most I have ever done. I then loaded the bar with 400 to get a feel for it. Damn that is a heavy bar now. Did 3 negatives that were very controlled to get a good feel for 400lbs. I'm a ways away from it, but it will come. This will be a good friendly way to push each other to 4 Bills...
Very cool Newlife, thats a nice squat. I haven't squated heavy for about two weeks on the back squat so I am still probably around 365 myself.
If you want I can start a post in the Training log section called something like the "Race to 400 squat" or something where anyone who wants to join can post how they are doing and any updates, unless you just want to start a log yourself. Or we can do both.
And the kegs are for celebration after lifting .

I sent a note this AM to JP asking for premission to post in the log section. Feel free to start a thread if you like and we can all update with our progress. Got bench tonight... 2nd workout using wood blocks. Nice pause at the bottom and trying to explode to lockout.
The Kegs were great to see as I remember you posting a pic about 6-8 months ago doing a keg press! Nothing like beer and iron!
