Bill, how much cardio and what type do you reccomend for golfers? Right now I do HIIT for 30 minutes on the elleptical machine after my weight workouts three times a week, and I also do two longer sessions on Tuesday and Thursday to improve my endurance. Just wanted to see what you thought about how this looks.

Fatigue from golf comes primarily from the repetitive application of the stretch-shortening cycle in the swing and the loading of passive joint structures from being in a standing position for an extended period of time.

Rarely is aerboic fitness a limiting factor in performance (ask John Daly ), so I don't prescribe a lot of direct energy system training to improve golf performance. I may prescribe it to address body composition issues that may indirectly improve performance. Your HIIT should cover that sufficiently.

Bill

P.S. Please see the most recent issue of Men's Fitness for my feelings on "cardio".

Bill, just read your article, and I found it very informative. Right now, I can't play any because of school. I am moving to a new routine to add some mass for next season. I will be lifting four days a week. Will four sessions of sprinting after my workouts be good. I know that it will impede my weight gain a little, but I have a very difficult time losing fat so I want to try and gain as little as possible while I bulk up. I am going to do ~10 sprints of 100 yards after each workout on Monday and Friday and then do some HIIT on the elleptical with two to three minute intervals on Tuesday and Thursday. Just wanted to get your view on how this looks. Thanks for the help.
