Gloves. Chalk. I prefer gloves. Sometimes I wear 'em sometimes I don't.

Funny you should ask that BigNasty, I asked that question at the Mens Health Forum and pretty much got laughed at and ridiculed. Which is a big reason why I'm here now.

I did get one positive feedback though. Someone told me that Versagrips was a really good idea, I haven't checked them out yet but if you want to here's the link

Versagrips

Hmmm.. that's a different alternative. Not a bad idea.

Yeah, at MH forum you really have to think before you post something. Guys are always ready to eat you alive. That's something this close knit group doesnt have to worry about. I'm here much more than there anymore.

Yeah, I've had a real good experience here so far. A lot less BS and a lot more to the point information. Good people too

I think the actual style of workout makes a big differece. If you're sticking to a strict push or pull (vert\horz) then the weights should almost never move in your hands, but if you're doing a movement where you're crossing the vert\horz axis...say like curls\ext\cleans...whatever then you've got a much higher chance of causing friction on your hands.

Just to answer your question though...gloves or chalk.

Personally i love the blisters and stuff on my hands, as well as cuts, bruises and all that good stuff. makes me feel like ive actually been doing something. that being my case, ive never really looked into anti blister stuff, but the gloves and chalk does sound like a good idea though.

(note to self: stop posting pointless stuff while waiting for carne asada to defrost)

There's a great product (and I speak purely anecdotally on this one) called "Climb On!". I think you can order it through climbonproducts.com. It's a wax-like bar that you can apply to your blisters and they heal way faster than if you left them alone. I used the stuff for rowing, where your hands really do get all crapped up, especially at the beginning of the spring season.

Otherwise, just keep the blisters covered with some tape while lifting. The calluses will form eventually.

No one's mentioned this, but I'd guess at a gym you'd want to use gloves rather than chalk. At last for me, I'd be really annoyed to pick up a piece of equipment and discover there's chalk all over it.

I think it was on the MH forum that someone brought up concerns with blood or sweat left on the DBs and BBs, too. Never seen it myself, but it's one of those things for the neurotic among us to think about...

Anyways, I'd say get some lifting gloves. They're cheap and effective.

Yeah...use of chalk is prohibited at my gym. So I have to go for the gloves.

if a blister tears, just cut it off with...something...and fill in the blister crater with superglue. let it dry (one would think that'd be obvious but ya never know), and you'll be good as new!

depending on how deep it is, you might feel a slight stinging sensation.

Heck, I forgot all about another alternative until I read the post about deads. I've only been using the stiff legged ones lately so I haven't had to use them but.... lifting straps! Used them all the time with heavy deads.

Advantage of working out at home in my own little gym: I can use chalk! ha!

Tell me he doesn't have a No Chalk rule....Please!

Having no chalk is like lifting to classical music...
No...I WISH I worked out at JP's...Chera made it sound like an awesome gym (as I'm sure it is). I live in PA so the flights back and forth might cost a bit much Oh, and speaking of music, they only allow 2 stations where I work out cause I think some of the older folks there were offended by some of the lyrics in some songs...so if I want anything that gets me pumped, I gotta wear earphones or just sing...which I do tend to do...lol. Probably best though cause when I hear dance music...I'm off dancing in between sets. (I know what you are thinking Scooter...no..there are no poles around )

i use my hands, but when i do stuff like hang cleans i use gloves....they only cost me like $15 maybe and they have padding and stuff....my hands have been caloused for a while...when i started catching for my baseball team i had blisters all the time and they are calouses now....but i only use the gloves when the weight will move in my hands...cuz when my calouses open it tends to hurt like hell...
