In the current routine Im doing, I went doing BB bench press (flat) for 5*5 for 4 weeks, come weeks 5-8, I switched to decline DB press. On the flat bench I started at 150lb and by wk 4 I was at 180lb. When I went to do the DB I figured that the barbell strength would transfer over, and since I was in a more advantageous position, I figured that I could do 90lbs in each hand since I did 180 on the BB. Well that was not the case, I had to drop down to the 55s on wk 5 and it looks like Im going to finish the program at 75lbs for 5*5.

Heres the question: I know that stablizer muscles are activated more in the DB press than the BB press, but besides that, is there any other reason why if bench benching 200lbs on a bar would not lead to a direct transfer of weight of 100lbs in each hand? Although I am definately getting a heck of a workout, I wonder if I am actually working less.

Additionally, if I could do 100lbs in a flat DB press, would this necessarily mean that I could do a flat BB bench press of 200lbs?

Wow! Those are some massive strength increases! Can I see your program?

To answer your question though, part of the reason is that dumbells give you a larger ROM, and activate the chest more, as opposed to barbells which do not travel as far down, and rely more heavily on the triceps. This might be a reason why.

Seriously though, can I see your program? For such a short period of time your strength SKYROCKETED.
