Ok...I'm starting to notice a pattern here. Seems every time I have a new exercise added to my regime it hits me in the friggin lower back and makes it so sore...waaaaaaa!
Anyway, Should the standing military (DB) press be making my low back sore? Or is this a sign that I have bad form? (again)
no, the military presses should not make your back sore. Make sure that you are not arching your back too much or leaning back when you do the lift. this is most likely a sign of bad form.
If you havent done them in a while, then yes your core will feel sore (provided you havent done much core work either). If youre hold the weight at the top for a sec or two, your stabilizers are really going to get worked.
There is the habit that some people have about leaning back on the spine which isnt the best thing to be doing.

I was wondering if doing db military presses would be better for you on a swiss ball. I know it would be harder with heavy weight on a ball, but would it promote strength gains.
You would be using less weight than standing, but maybe using more of your shoulders and less of your back. Any thoughts?
That sounds like it would def be a better workout...but I'm thinkin I might just try and get my form down with my footsys on the floor first.
I'll probably lower the weight a little and pay attention to posture...I may have been leaning back a bit to support the weight. I didn't have this in the seated press...just standing...so that makes sense.
yeah, ive had the same problem with the lower back thing. i noticed that towards the last couple of reps i would start leaning back some. i had to drop the weight a little bit and try and get into what i think is a pretty stable position (like you were setting up for squats, a little wider than shoulder width stance and knees slightly bent). that pretty much did the trick.
Try keeping your head DOWN, worked pretty well for me. Also, instead of just lifting it up, imagine trying to lift the dbs above your neck, obviously it's impossible to do if you lean back so that should keep you from doing it [img]smile.gif[/img]

but GQ, don't we have to lean back a little to have the bar passes in front of our face? I have the same problem with my lower back when doing Military Press, so i changed it with heavy DB Shoulder Press, & it works good.
