suspension training, building strength and scheuermann's disease
Hi everyone,
This is my first post here, but I saw some other threads on suspension training and felt like it might be a good place to post. I have a few questions, I'd be really appreciative if anyone could offer some insights!
Some background, I did gymnastics a lot when I was younger, and basic weight lifting when I was in my teens (but without really knowing what I was doing). I'm 26 now and I haven't done much beyond riding my bike for years. I have Scheuermann's disease (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scheuermann's_disease) which means my back is naturally rounded and midback is prone to injury. Anyway, I'm sick of feeling like I'm going to break when I lift anything, and want to start building up my strength again.
I've been looking into suspension training because I like the exercise-anywhere-without-much-equipment idea, and think it would be good for core, all body general strengthening. My housemate uses kettlebells and osteo recommended clubbells so I might start using them at some point too.
So questions are:
Do I need to get a TRX or some other premade system? They seem pretty expensive for what they are, and I was wondering if I couldn't just get some rope or strong webbing, stick some handles on it and learn a few climbing knots for securing it and changing length similar to this: http://ropesforfitness.com/default.html
My only concern with that would be safety, don't want it to break while I'm using it.
TRX apparently has 300ish possible exercises, but are there just a few basic exercises that I could really focus on that would strengthen my whole body?
I'm not worried about getting massive, but I'd like to get a lot stronger than I am now. How would I approach training with that in mind?
Also, in terms of Scheuermann's if anyone has experience with it could they recommend some exercises? I think rows and back exercises are good to help naturally pull my shoulders back and I don't want to overwork my chest for the same reason. Should I be focussing on back muscles?
That's a lot of typing / questions so thanks for anyone who reads and replies!
I have a TRX. Yes it is expensive for what it is - I'd probably go with a different system if I was buying it again - maybe like this one or others that I've seen online.
I like the variety of exercises you can do with a suspension training system.

If you can do basic pulling/pushing movement, then you can do suspension training. TRX is a great product and the company had done a great job with education. But I have a hard time to spend $150 for few yards of webbing, 2 cambuckles, a carabiner and a pair of handles. Go to the local hardware store and buy 2 tie down straps for less than $20. Then order a pair of Handles from a fitness catalog like Perform Better or Power Systems for about $25. If you are a beginner, then buy TRX Beginners DVD or something like that for about $35. Your total investment would be about $80 or half of what would cost a TRX by the time it gets to your door. Once you feel comfortable with this basic, affordable suspension system, then you can try a higher level of suspension system aka AirFitPro. Visit www.purmotion.net
I must be getting cynical. But this sorta crap is what makes me not want to answer people's questions when they first post.
I am thinking I should take a picture of me with my TRX and mail it to the company.
"I was going to buy the cheaper Purmotion system, but then I encountered spam marketing associated with your product and decided I would rather deal with a reputable company, and so purchase this TRX system."

Have you use both products to make an opinion? What credentials you have to bash a company you don't even know about. Educate yourself first, give them a call or visit their website, then talk.
I don't think anyone has a problem with your system. The cynical part is because it's common here for someone to come and post a question, soon followed by an answer with a link to a product. It appears to be spam, but since the followup is answering a question, it's less likely to be deleted. To make things look worse, your screen name is the name of the company that you are suggesting, yet you say "them" and "their" in your post to refer to that company.
Also, whether it's your company or just a product you like, you do no one any favors by coming in with one post and softly bashing the competition for the cost of the sum of it's parts, while this product merely has different parts and an even higher sum to justify.

I know nothing about you disease, so can't comment. There are several threads about the TRX, gymnastic rings, Jungle Gym, etc. on the forum. All have their place and different pricing structures depending on what you want.
