Default Maximum Strength broad jumps and shin splints

I did broad jumps for the first time today, 5 sets of 5, and I got shin splints almost immediately. I'm sure my form is not great considering it's my first time ever attempting a broad jump (skipped Packing Day) and I was wearing my Pumas to lift in, but I'm pretty sore right now.

Is this common? Do I really have to do broad jumps? Can I substitute something for it, considering I don't really care how far I can jump?

I think I only did broad jumps once or twice. I did jump squats instead, any explosive movement like that would get the job done I think.

This probably is at least related to this:
Upper/lower body warm-ups for Maximum Strength

So you don't get shin splints. Haha.

I've had some awful shin splints in the past and I'm on Cresseys Program right now and the broad jumps are fine for me. I do the foam rolling and warm ups in his program religiously though. I'm jumping on grass in bare feet too, which I'm sure makes a big difference. Try finding a softer surface?

yea funny how that works. though, i have been doing the warm-ups for months, well before i started the program, so it's not like i've been skipping much, only if i'm in a rush. i think i'll try it on a softer surface, though i'll have to wait until I get home to try it on grass. I train at a Golds and the floor is hard and I have to wear shoes.

Are you landing hard or cushioning by absorbing force? The goal is the jump, not to stick the landing. Also, can you walk outside and do it on grass, then come back inside?

Do you do a lot of running? The shin splints might be more from poor running form and just appearing here because of the extra force involved.

no i don't run, they are from the jumps, it was on a hard surface in the gym. never doing them before i just kind of jumped back and forth in one area in my flat-soled shoes. there really isn't a place to do them outside, it's a concrete-surrounded area in Worcester MA. i can always do them at home after, or even maybe on a separate day. i doubt switching them to another day is going to impede my progress.
