Mahler’s Monday Morning Motivator # 277 – It Rained

It Rained
(10-19-09)

It’s raining. It’s pouring. The old man is snoring. Some of you may remember that old rhyme from your days as a toddler. Hell, if I can remember it, anyone can. Well, starting early in the morning last Thursday, it rained. Continuing into Friday, it rained. All day Saturday, it rained. Sunday morning and most of the day, it rained. Now, I was not one to worry that it would never stop, but the thought of going down to the basement and drawing up some plans for an ark did cross my mind. How perfectly unbiblical it would have been with just me, my wife, and one cat along for the ride. Besides, I had no idea what a cubit was and I was pretty sure that Home Depot would not have a sufficient supply of gopher wood.

And, so, I stayed put and watched as it rained. The nights were punctuated with the staccato of the rain beating against the window pains and the days were dirge-like with low hanging grey clouds, cold and incessant downpours. I have to say, it was pretty depressing when I considered that earlier in the week I rode home with the top down and enjoyed the sun.

I live for the weekends, relishing getting out, going places, doing things and enjoying the outdoors. And, as weekends go, this particular one was definitely lacking in quality. Oh, and did I mention that it rained. So what did I do to get out of the nature imposed doldrums? What did this purveyor of weekly motivational mayhem come up with to keep himself motivated throughout the dark time. I did … nothing.

Yes, you read that right. I did nothing. Well, let me qualify that. I did not go down to the basement gym and take advantage of the equipment there. I did not set foot on the treadmill. I did not do one single pushup, chin-up, stretch, jumping jack, or anything resembling same. What I did do was park my ass on an easy chair and watch about five movies, surf the web on my laptop and in the course of the weekend eat every conceivable consumable so long as it was totally lacking in nutritional value. If the label indicated that the substance within the package contained positively no protein and was high in fat, sugar or carbohydrates and having a high amount of sodium, it found its way to my gaping maw.

I have not had a weekend like this for a long time and for some, sick, twisted reason, it felt good. Well, until I stepped on the scale this morning. Trust me, if there were some phantom dietary confessional nearby, I would be on my knees chanting, “bless me father for I have sinned.” The crap that I consumed over the course of just those few days was certainly of a sufficient quantity to damn me to nutritional hell and I knew it. Besides, I had an ironclad get-out-of-hell-free card. After all, it rained.

But, let me do some backpedaling here and put things into perspective. I’ve just completed over six months of my current routine with very little in the way of break-time, even including a minor injury. I tested my maximums during the past week and a few were pretty decent. While I had not planned it so, I almost think that the little voices inside of me were saying that I needed a reward. Now, please, no jokes about my little voices. They get perturbed if people doubt them. Suffice it to say, that in some way I had unconsciously needed a pat on the back and a little treat like a milkbone biscuit tossed to that favorite pet with the prerequisite “good boy.” Anyway, that’s my story and I am sticking to it.

Late in the afternoon on Sunday, the clouds, apparently depleted of their tears in lament of the end of summer, dispersed and the sun made an appearance. Of course it was too late to do much and only hours before I would be heading up for bed, so I gave the bright, shining light a little greeting with my middle finger and had another treat.

We all fall off the wagon from time to time. It may be intentionally, unintentionally or, as my voices will tell you, unconsciously. It happens and there is only one thing to do when it does. Get the hell off your ass and climb back on before the wagon is out of reach. I began the seventh month of my program this morning and I’ll be spending this week climbing back on that wagon and getting my nutrition back in order. If you find yourself in a similar situation, do the same. Get active, get motivated and get going. Don’t just stand there telling yourself that it rained
