I live in South Bay but work in Orange County so I'm flexible with whatever locale works for the majority. Yes, I do commute but since I'm a professor, I only have to do it 2-3 times per week.
The planning committee met tonight over dangerballs and it looks like somewhere in the South Bay is the likely location.

Donna, do you happen to know a park with fishing in the South Bay area? I have a 12 year old boy who lives to fish, catch minnows, and crawfish, but he won't have much interest in hanging with a crowd. He's happiest taking off with a pole or a bucket and a couple of boys or girls.
I'm thinking of going over to Alondra Park Lake tomorrow to check it out. It's not too far.
Tony and I just got back from Alondra Park, which has a stocked lake, picnic areas, bbqs, etc. Nothing fancy, but lots of grass, restrooms, trees, squirrels, ducks, geese, and a 5 fish limit.
For those who know the area, it's right next to Alondra Golf Course and El Camino College. On Redondo Beach Blvd, right near the 405.
I thought of El Dorado Park, too. That's another good option. That park is huge!
Tony gave this one a thumbs up, for what that's worth.
Sorry I just saw this now. Yeah, Alondra is good. Used to go there as a kid to feed the ducks.
El Dorado is massive (over 380 acres) and they have a train ride which would be great for families with small children. They also have boating docks, model boat launch sites and a 4 mile bike path. The parking is $7 on the weekends.
Do we have small children coming? The ones I know about are medium-to-large.
And we need to start talking about food. I can coordinate the potluck, if people want to start throwing out ideas we can get started. I've been trying to think about what would be good cold--some sort of sammiches, I guess, which by all accounts Roland needs anyway.
We could set up a Sandwich Station along with a few vegetable and pasta salads, fruit trays, etc. This way the non-cooks can go to Costco or their local market and pick up a prepared tray of food.

Good idea. Easy and picnic are the name of the game.
There are small bbqs there, but I didn't see any of those large ones at this park. Sort of limits the initial hope for a large grilling event!
Anytime is ok with us as we are free all day...we'd prefer earlier than later since we will have a bit of a drive and school the next day...
I was kidding about the sammiches...although if there's no grilling possible it limits what we can do--how big are the grills, Roland? I was hoping to have Peter work some of his Kebab magic...
What's our count?
Roland & 2 Kids
Chris & Aya
Elisabeth &Peter and at least 3 kids---possibly a bunch of teenagers
Kathy (who should bring Tom)
Donna
Alan & family
Lisa
Gwen
Alice
Others
So that's at least 15 people...can everyone let us know if they're planning to attend?
Here's the copy/paste of an email that I sent out to a few friends. Feel free to do the same. If you email or PM me your own email address, I can forward the email to you, as well. Just let me know!
Roland
Dear To Whom It May Concern,
I'm trying to get a headcount for the event, so read on and let me know!
A bunch of us locals from in and around JPFitness.com are getting together at Alondra Park on Sunday, November 8th. A casual start time of 11am or so will allow us to workout a bit (if desired, of course) then hang out and have a nice and casual lunch at 1pm or so. How's that? Well, it's awesome, right? Yes. Yes, it is.
There will be fitness events and standard "park stuff" for those who just want to hang out with family and friends at a park.
akettlebell introductionworkshop
a fun bootcamp style workout (bodyweight workout, calisthenics, kettlebells, medicine balls, sled, and more)
potluck picnic and bbq/grilling
make some new friends IN REAL LIFE and finally get to meet some of your "online friends"
plenty of fitness and nutrition discussions
lake for fishing
grass for playing (it's a park, you know!)
eating
fun
So far, confirmed are at least three personal trainers, two kettlebell instructors, some excellent cooks, and possibly a famous sports nutritionist and weight loss expert.
OK people, the time is now. Our First Southern California JP Fitness Picnic is in 3 days! Time to plan the FOOD.
Here is my plan: I am going to purchase 4 chickens at Costco and they can be our protein at the picnic. I will also bring a large salad with my homemade dressing, plus plastic utensils.
Please chime in with your contributions! Side dishes, fruit or dessert would be in order, or if your family is vegetarian, a main dish. Drinks and napkins are also desired.
Is alcohol allowed in the park? I assume not but beer just goes well with kettlebells.
Do we need other drinks?
head count?

The grilling situation is not good there. It's just small bbqs near picnic tables. ...and there are no reservations, either. There have been plenty of spaces for large groups available the past three weekends, so I think we'll be fine.
If things are successful, we can come up with a better locale for the next one!
I'm bringing two kids with me, so my headcount is 3.
I can bring drinks, waters, and a cooler. Ice, cups, etc. Just need a better idea of headcount.
No alcohol, Chris. Sorry. A beer would be good.... next one!

PM me if any questions--and see you on Sunday!
I sent this email out to my group of "email only" potential attendees. So far, there's not a large number that is able to confirm that they are attending, so it could be an intimate event, which is okay too.

Just a reminder! I'm looking forward to meeting many of you for the first time this Sunday and introducing you to some of our long time friends. Around 11am to whenever! This is going to be fun, and I hope the start of a trend that we'll be able to carry on.
Still need headcounts so we can be sure to tell you what you can bring. Nothing fancy, we're talking simple picnic food and drink! This is a no-stress event and fun for all!
Roland
PS. For those of you who still aren't sure you can come. Please do come if the opportunity comes up. Don't worry about bringing something to pass. If you come at the last minute, just bring a lunch. BTW, there are several "fast food" establishments just down the street and no one will mock you for a burger. I love burgers! Everything in moderation, right?
Well we're coming. Do you want me to invite other trainers/friends?

Gwen says she is coming and is calling this famous nutritionist and weight loss expert person that she knows to "bug" him to join in too just in case he is thinking about backing out.
(no promises but this guy has a hard time saying "No" to an adorable girl and ex client)
Make sure to eat a burger for me and wish me well as I will be getting smashed in practice during this time. LOL!

You can try, but we talked earlier, and his whole family is sick!
I am/was planning to attend but my car lost power and died on the 405 Freeway this evening. I got the car towed to our usual repair show so if I can get my car repaired in time, I'll be there.

I have a recipe for a yummy southwest bean salad with cilantro and chipotles...got it from Eating Well years ago so it is fit food!
Still don't know if I'm coming alone or not...won't know until tomorrow night most likely.
Added bonus. Sign up now and you'll automatically be registered in the tug of war round robin tournament. See Roland take on everyone's kids in tug O war by himself!
2nd bonus: Special battling ropes metabolic fat torching session.
