Hey everyone, I recently ran my 2nd marathon(2:57). I was wondering if anyone would suggest a program that I could do while I am recovering(running lower mileage) and build my base mileage back up.

Usually when after I run my marathons, I deload and use rollerblades the same distance. Gradually I stop using the rollerblades, and run the other half. That's near the end of my deload weeks. After deloading, I run the same distance while wearing chains.
Nothing matches it in building my base mileage up.
Thats so wicked advice Flumen!! I never thought like that with the rollerblades and running but i bet it makes a transfer from the other to one and back so that each helps get better at the other. I fall sometime when im on the rollerblades so that can hurt bit running im in pretty good balanced.

LOL brah, it was sarcasm. I like being big and strong.
tl;dr i dont don't run over a mile-mile and a half EVER
Barrett, congratulations on your sub-3 hour marathon! That's quite an accomplishment. I've run 3 of them and never was able to break 3 hours.
I'm sorry that folks here aren't giving you a serious answer. Lots of folks on this forum don't accept diversity. They think that being muscular and strong is all that matters, and don't appreciate that a skinny & fast distance runner is also an athlete worthy of respect.
I wish I could give you a good answer, but it's not clear to me what your goals are or what you are looking for. Are you interested in improving strength or just recovering and getting back into running? Do you have another marathon or other race planned?
A marathon can really beat you up, so I would do nothing but stretching and massage for a week. Then start with some cross-training to prevent injury. Cycling always helps my knees. If you aren't training for another race soon, then I recommend more strength training during the off season. I am enjoying the NROL (New Rules of Lifting) programs.

I sometimes dont get the sarcasm on the computer so i missed that one i guess. I think that mabey even if you were doing sarcasm that the idea might still work!! but thats just me.

Actually, I was pretty much disrespecting running, since I can.
..And I don't like the whole "emaciated, shin splits" look. D:
You never kno Flumen im tellin ya. I knew a dude at my gym who was wicked huge like 270 doin the juicin' and placing real good in some state level strongman competitions. He got banged up on the knee though and then he found the strongman stuff hard cuz his knee was hurting so now hes trying to do marathons. So you might someday in the near of far future time be doing running instead of hittin the weights wicked hard but youll still be having goals and goin hardcore to the max!

If the day comes I have to retire heavy lifting, I'm retiring from lifting period. I'll just turn my second hobby of woodworking into my main avocation.
I think you be suprised mabey Flumen. People with big goals always find mor big goals and if the heavy lifting is in the days of the past then youll mabey run cuz youll want to do some physical stuff cuz you wont wanna have a heart attack when your young.
Well I qualified for Boston (b/c to qualify is a time of 3:10 or lower for my age group) so I was planning on running that race in April!

Congrats! I don't think that anyone here (excepts Flumen) is bashing you for being into endurance work. But, the prevailing thoughts here are that strength is the chief attribute that has more carryover to performance than anything else. So, if your running volume is reduced while you're recovering from the recent race, I think most would encourage some emphasis on strength training until you need to get back into the volume portion of your training.

But, that's a guess!
Yep. In fact, we were just discussing the benefits of strength training to runners in another discussion.
Chris, like I said earlier, try NROL. Do you own it?
