He is a full write-up of the day, plus some pics I pulled off the video as promised. I might get a couple more pictures up later if my training partner e-mails me some good ones but I have some cool ones for now.
Viking Press - Man am I glad I don't have to do this again for a long time. I hate this thing more than I hate front squatting. Not much more to say. I do know that if I want to place well in a contest I really need to work on overhead strength, its a big weakness. Unfortunaly no good pictures of this one yet, we had some camera problems. My training partner hit 15 reps I think. He is a beast and got screwed out of some time, the show wasn't run very well.
On all the pictures, clicking on the thumbnail will bring up a larger image. Autographed copies available on request .
Deadlift - After this I would have been fine leaving. I had a giant PR and felt great. The 5 reps with 500 is still hard to fathom. My low back and glutes are so sore I can barely walk. The one regret I have on this one is that being the first guy to go, I had no idea what to shoot for. This was a very close event and if I would have had a goal I might have gotten more. Had I pulled two more, and I might have been able to with better management of my minute, I would have taken a much higher place and ended up in 7 or 8 overall. Oh well not a big deal. My training partner won this event with 21 reps. Yes you read that right, 21 reps on the deadlift.
A couple pics.
Starting first rep:
Lockout of first rep:
Working hard for the 5th rep:
Next came the Crusafix hold. I screwed up on this one. As I got tired I had too much elbow bend and at 26 seconds the right ax slipped out. I had another 5-10 seconds in me so I was pretty pissed about this one. My training partner hit about 60 seconds and took second here. He is on his way to domination. Here is a pic of me partway through:
Last was the Hussafel. I did great here. Walked for 128 feet and held the lead through the first 4 guys. Impressed a lot of people with the performance and really tore up my arm. I have some kickass bruises. I almost lost the thing on my first turn at 50 feet when I turned too quick and it got out in front of me. Inertia is a bitch while holding a 350 lb stone. Training partner took first in this with right around 200 feet. Thats 2 firsts and 2 second place finishes for him. He is good.
First 50 feet:
On my way back, holding tight:
Losing it:
So thats the competition. I had a blast and learned a ton. Next one is April 9th in Chicago. This should be a really good showing for me as long as everything goes pretty well.
I ended up taking 9th out of 9 and my training partner, Jeff, took 1st in the lightweights and also won overall champion due to points. He had a pretty good day even getting screwed on the first event. I train with an awesome group of guys and without them there is not a chance I would have done what I did.
Thanks a lot for the support guys, it means a lot.
Danny

Danny, commendable job for your first competition. pulling 500lbs for 5 is incredible!! Nice going!!
I'm surprised the Hassafel is done indoors. doesn't that tear up the floor and/or have the potential to break the stone apart? do you have to pick the stone up off the floor to start or is it some type of stand?
Could you explain the crusafix hold? it looks like the handles are clamped to a cross beam or something.
btw, can i get an autographed copy of ur crusafix hold pic?

The hussafel (I have no idea how to spell this damn word!) is metal, so it won't break, and yeah it could have put a bit of a dent in the floor but most guys dropped it like I did, flat side on the ground. The guy who made it makes quality stuff and it will take a beating.
In the hold, you hold those two silver axes into the slots on the horizontal cross bar. Here is a pic of me failing so you can see what part you support and where. The clamps are there so you can adjust it to each person and still have full lockout of the arms.

Thanks again guys.
Danny
yes, I can see them and when you click the thumbnail, it gives you the blown up picture.
500x5 is still blowing my mind. 400 is bad enough, I can't imagine 100lbs more and for reps.

Newlife - my lowerback doesn't really believe I did it either. Its kind of mad at me right now. Lots of heating pad and foam rolling is getting it back to normal.
GQ- Thanks, I thought the socks where a nice touch.
Ninja - I rocked the Chucks for the deadlift but the rest of the events were just regular New Balance.
Thanks all.

The support means a lot guys. I can't wait for my next one. Hopefully my training will be even better. With my Ultra-secret Ninja training plan I have in place nothing can fail...
...And when I say Ultra-secret Ninja training I just mean smart training focusing on bringing up weak points and controlling volume and intensity.
Here is a cool picture of my left arm today from the Husafell.

I thought you meant the training that you and I were doing.

Danny, Is the deadlift always done with a specialty bar like the ones in the pics? If so, how much easier is it to pull weight vs. an oly bar? I imagine it takes the bar roll out of the grip issue, and would allow for a standard grip vs. staggered, no?
That's how I learned to deadlift, they're pretty nice. It's definately interesting switching from that grip to the standard oly bar deads. Plus, w/ the trap bars, you don't scrap the shins as much...

Dude! That is awesome! Way to get out and do it, brother. I know you've been working towards this for a long time. I still think you should consider Chuck's....style points, brother!
I don't undserstand what you meant about the Crucifix hold. Was the elbow bend causing weakness?
