80% of all poker players consider themselves "better than average".

IMO that's a statement that can be adapted towards most things and still ring pretty true. Walk around and ask someone what level of knowedge or skill that they have vs the "average" person and see what answer comes out.

How would you rate yourself in comparison to the rest of the world in reguards to fitness\fitness knowedge?

Solidly well above the average joe/jane. About par with the average forum member here.

I have no idea why I bothered to do this self-assessment.

I know enought about fitness to know how little I acutally know I would think that simply from experience I know more about fitness than the average person on the street. I would be below most others on this forum.

As for poker, that's an easy one to answer. Is your bankroll bigger or smaller than when you started? If it's larger then you're at least better than the average skill of the people you play against.

I think I'd put myself very near the top of the overall population in both knowledge and actual fitness.

The quesiton is interesting because it depends on your definition of "fitness." I subscribe to the CrossFit definition: fitness includes endurance, stamina, strength, speed, flexibility, etc. and a person with moderate ability in all areas is more "fit" than a person with expert ability in one area.

If you asked me right now, I could (for example)deadlift 350, do 40 dips, run a 1:50 half marathon, and do a decent 100M sprint. Individually, none of these feats is very impressive, but together I think they reflect a high level of balanced fitness.

So, I consider myself to be more fit than--for example--Lance Armstrong. Even though he could crush me in most endurance competitions, I would beat him in strength, power, flexibility, etc. Likewise, even though Dave Tate could crush me in strength and power, I would beat him in all the other areas. The generalist is more fit than the specialist.

That's my take anyway.

CrossFit.com has a "What is fitness?" article that is worth checking out.

I assume that almost everyone posting here is well above average in fitness knowledge compared with the population in general (which has almost zero knowledge). And either well above average in actual fitness or on the way to getting there.

I guess location could be a factor -- in a tony 'burb of San Francisco, there are probably a lot of fit people in my age range (38). But where I live (Ground Zero for the Obesity Epidemic), I am definitely way above the curve for strength and endurance/running.

That's so true of education in general. The more you learn, the more you realize that there's so much more to be learned if that's your goal. In terms of functional knowledge, I think I know enough to accomplish what I want to accomplish at the moment. If my goals were higher, I'd no doubt need to know more. Same is true of a beginner; 3x10 workouts will achieve results in most cases. If a person is a trainer, you'd HOPE they knew a lot and if they aspire to be more than just a trainer at the local health club, such as Chad, CB, et al, then they need to demonstrate an exceptional level of knowledge.

But the player with the smaller bankroll would still argue that he is better than average, he just got dealt bad hands.

I'm afraid I'm not nearly as knowldgable as I'd like to be. The pros are in this forum and I am just a spectator. As far as the general public I'm sure I'm better than average. I want to know enough to make me go faster in an adventure race.

That summed it up pretty well, so I might as well give eastcoastsurfer credit.

Chris - thanks - LOL!! Hey, I'll start claiming that I'm a god in my area. That should go over really well down here!!!

I probably shouldn't say that I am well above the curve in strength. Maybe in leg-dominant exercises, but I am sure there are many guys in my area with more upper body strength than I have. I am not naturally strong upper bodywise, so even with consistent training, I may have made it to average. I know a lot of the blue collar guys in my area with demanding jobs are very strong.
