Default stooopid question . . . but

I know there are some on here taking some extreme steps in order to get thinner quickly. RFL, for example. I also know they are doing it the 'smart' way, as far as trying to keep as much muscle mass as possible.

BUT, I know that in the past when I have lost weight quickly, that I tended to gain it all back just as quickly . . even when I tried really hard to eat smart and healthy.

The weight always came back quickly.

Is there a correlation with losing weight slowly and keeping it off?

I ask this based on these assumptions:

~I can't think of anyone that has long weight rapidly and kept it off

~It seems like your body is in 'recovery mode' when you have kept it at such an extreme deficit for so long, but then start feeding it again

~The only people I know that have had long term successful weight loss are those that seemed to take forever to lose it.

Just a random wonderment.

I think it is more people who didn't manage their transition to maintenance or took the brakes off when they hit goal or stopped exercising when they hit goal, etc. etc. I don't think it had anything physiologically with the speed of the loss. IMHO.

You have to look at what they did at "the end" of their diet. What did you do at the end? Why did you start eating and living life poorly again? Psychological, IMO.

I lost 2-3 lbs per week for a couple of months, then 1-2 lbs per week going from 235 straight down to 160. That was 6 years ago. How's that?

losing weight slowly signifies a lifestyle change = long term success

losing weight quickly signifies a short term ramp up of willpower

I know folks that have done both successfully. Regardless of the method it takes quite a bit of commitment. Most people get the short term thing. It's the whole doing it for the rest of your life that throws people off.

I find that after doing RFL I'm just eating smaller meals (no more pigouts) and have kept the weight (and fat) off. I'm going to start another round of RFL on Monday to drop off some more fat.

This is a big reason Lyle suggests eating whole-food meals in RFL, becasue part of it is building up proper eating habits. Just scarfing down shakes like with the VD doesn't do that, let alone some of the really retarded stuff like those "soup and cabbage" or "lemon and water" diets that seem to come along every few months in the idiot circles.

If you just think of RFL as "a diet to do" then go back to eating and acting like a fat slob, you go back to being a fat slob.

It's the changes over the long-term that matter.

I'm gonna say kinda the same thing as others in the thread, but I'll use different words and delude myself into thinking it's a unique contribution. It's a skill.

One difference between many RFL followers and your average crash dieter is the overall mindset. If someone actually reads all of RFL and has some experience with training and nutrition plans, then they probably understand where the plan will take them, and what the next steps will be. So they're already thinking ahead (lose 20 lbs with RFL--> work on conditioning --> get stronger --> compete in a fun event etc...). RFL is just one step. Some crash dieters, on the other hand, see the initial weight loss as the end goal, and don't have any clue what to do after that. Without the next step laid out they just return to their comfortable position of fatness.

It's like with marriage. You can view the wedding ceremony as only the beginning of the most crazy, challenging, fun, complex and rewarding relationship you'll ever have. Or you can view it as the pinnacle, assuming that life after that will be on autopilot and you'll just live happily ever after like a chick flick.

So basically I'm suggesting that to test if someone's fast weight loss plan might stick, ask them the question "and then what?" for the next steps. If they haven't even thought about it yet, and are assuming everything will just be easy and awesome because they'll be thin, then it probably won't go well.

Thats why I'm glad its taken me 18 months to get here. That gave me plenty of time to put a plan into place. Because, I sure didn't have one when I started.
