It's not necessary that a week off is a week where you lay on the couch.
I don't feel like you do when I am off I look forward to the next phase and I do mobility work, walking, and some resistance band work when I feel like it. Today I walked for 2 hours and did sprints in the park. It's my week off, I love it
I tend to push too hard and realized that I have not had a full week off in about 6 months. I even managed some workouts when on a cruise. Last week, I tweaked my back and can't help but think that this is my body's way of saying that I need some recouperation time. I will run, jog, etc. for the rest of this week. It's not the end of the world.

Same here; my back or hip always let me know when it's time to rest.
Where I'm different from Mahler is the six months without a break... I'm about five months short of that.

Don't think of it as a week off. Think of it as a change of focus for a week. Instead of focusing on the lifting, focus on mobility, relaxation, and aerobic exercise. I used to be an avid triathlete, and the week off from lifting allows me to do more running, cycling, swimming, stretching, yoga, etc.
Right now I have some pain in the tendons on the insides of my elbows, so I know my body is ready for a week off from lifting. Without the break it would likely become full-blown tendonitis or worse.
Rookie over on the MH boards had a good quote a couple of weeks ago. It was something like "Rest is part of your workout, not a break from it."

I'm usually still in the weight room during my week off; I just don't do my full workout. For example, I'll chop off a couple sets or reps, usually about half of one or the other, for my normal work sets, or I'll reduce the weight by 20-30%. This is enough to feel like I'm still doing something, but not so little that I go crazy from lack of work.
