Does limb length affect your bench press? An example, would a shorter person with shorter arms be able to lift more than a taller person with longer arms in the same weight category?

Yes.
Well actually it depends, but having shorter arms generally makes benchpressing easier...

Assuming all things equal, than yes a person with shorter arms has much less ROM so should be able to lift more.

this is just my take the. why not have height and limb length classifications. this may sounds stupid I know, but i'm tired of getting out lifted in the bench by guys shorter than me.
-Wouldn't taller people eventually win out? wouldn't a taller frame allow more muscle mass to hang from it? just curious.? I love this site

Its all about limb length for squats and bench presses. So long legs and torso suck for squatting. But long arms are great for the deadlift, it reduces ROM.

The height and limb stuff would just confuse things more. Often times at local meets there will only be 2-4 people in a class, break things down more and it would screw it up even more. Taller guys just need to put on more weight and move up a couple classes.

I agree with Danny, and not just because of his empirically proven power to attract women like gnats on an open wound.

I have kind of long arms and legs, and have never been able to bench press or squat worth a damn. But I'm surprisingly not bad at the deadlift. Most serious powerlifters can squat more than they deadlift, but my PR deadlift is 90 pounds better than my best-even squat.

And what he says about bigger guys needing to gain weight seems right, too. When I visited Westside back in October, there was one guy who was 6'7." But he was an elite powerlifter because he weighed close to 400 pounds, IIRC.

I just couldn't help wondering why someone that big and strong wasn't in the NFL. He seemed like a nice guy, so maybe he wasn't mean enough.

Danny only two guys in your meets per class. are you serious? that blows. Powerlifting is huge here in texas. Well I think it's just most of the football players either go into powerlifting or track for the spring.
Also, I cannot squat more than my deadlift!
-i'm getting ready for state. thanks for the information.

I have to echo what Lou stated. I have long arms and legs and my bench and squat are mediocre. My deadlift is by far my best lift.

I have to agree with Lou and Mahler. I am tall with very long arms and legs. My deadlift is pretty good, but I have a harder time progressing at squats and bench presses (I also have a hard time finding shirts that are long enough in the sleeve, but that is another story).

Plus the more hypertrophied your chest is the shorter ROM you have.

Progresso- check it out chuck... Try to really widen your hand placement on your bench, might be a little late for it now at this meet, but when you start training again work on a wider grip, you will probably feel weak at first but keep banging at it and your strength will go up and your ROM will be shorter.. Just my 2cents

Hmmm... I have shorter arms, average legs, and a longer torso (someone had fun putting me together), yet my bench sucks, my squats are okay, and my deadlift is pretty decent. Hey, look, it's Miller time

The research shows that the best predictors of bench press ability in men is a combination of arm size (not length), % bodyfat and chest circumference (Mayhew, 1991).

arm size generally relates to strength. arm length matters because our arms are basically levers. the further the weight is from the fulcrum (elbows, shoulders) the more force required by the muscles. also the increased distance the weight moves means increased work.
