Default biggest gimmick in strength and conditioning

Great article that takes a look at fancy devices to increase sprint speed. Some of the top strength and conditioning coaches in the indusrty are asked their opinions on overspeed training.

overspeed training=fancy gimmick, recipe for disaster, wasted money, improper sprint mechanics

This type of training jumps on the high-tech is better band wagon.

I agree. Doofus coaches at the Velocity I go to have kids to endless rounds of these. And substitute yelling for proper coaching. Some high priced babysitters there.

Somebody will always be out there looking for a gimmick or for some way that technology can be used to improve performance. I wonder what prehistoric man did to improve his performance when he was being chased by a saber tooth?

You just invented a new gimmick! Training with a saber tooth chasing you. It will give you such an adrenaline rush that you'll be able to recruit your IIIX fibers.. that's your super fast twitch fibers!

Gimmicks will always "hook" at least 50% of the people. It's not just in the fitness industry. The lure of a quick fix that would give us something for nothing is probably the biggest driving force in the weight loss world. just look at all those weight loss pills...makes you wonder why there's still that many fat people around.

I say the same thing about weight loss pills as I do for the cures for baldness. If the time ever comes that a truly effective magic pill type solution is discovered, there will be no need for shady internet advertising or late night infomercials to inform people of the product's efficacy. The damn thing will be on the shelf in every store that they can stock it in.

The best part about Biochemistry (Intro) was learning how the various poisons worked "under the covers". DNP, arsenic ... others. Good times.

That's only if you take too much.

If you can handle constant sweating, insomnia, and shortness of breath, the pounds just melt right off!

As it happens, we recently ran a terrific article by Craig Weller about how extreme stress affects performance.

Quick summary: Getting chased by a saber-tooth tiger ("condition black") might cause you to lose bowel control, or it might propel you to a sprint PR.

Not a recommended training technique, FWIW.

Not a horrible article. He's placing a bit too strong an emphasis on the neocortex (and thus the role of voluntary action in skill acquisition; the bulk of motor control is located deeper in the brain and only loosely tied in w/ cognition), but it gets the point across.

Plus I got a little laugh at the "brain is not a computer" line, but I can't hold that against him. That was just funny to me from a nerd standpoint (because he went on to say it was a mechanism for storing and processing information, so it is a computer, just not a serial/digital system like in our PCs).
