I've just had a thought about the effect that the time of day you work out has on your overall gains. It was while reading an article on John Berardi's website about insulin levels, and that you should try to eat high insulin index foods for your first three meals, and low insulin index foods for the rest of your meals that day. However, since you try to spike insulin immediately post workout, what is the effect going to be if you work out late in the evening (like I do) say after 6?

Are there any other potentially negative (or indeed positive) effects to working out late, or early, and is there any definitive rule as to what time of day is best?

Sorry about the long post, but this is something that really interests me. Cheers.

You might want to look into products like Biotest SURGE.

I normally would not name a product, but the stuff is damn good and addresses the issue you just talked about.

I used to workout at 4:45AM and never had an energy problem, now I workout between 4 and 6PM and needed something for recovery.

You could also make a high carb blend for cheaper, but Surge is easy and pretty cheap. $23 for 2lbs

You might keep looking at other articles. I'm not sure which one you read but generally his guidelines are F/P for all your meals except the two PWO where you go C/P. Then back to F/P.

I can't remember which article, maybe Lean Eatin' or Massive Eatin', where he lays out two scenarios. One for if you WO in the morning and one for the evening.

I get the feeling from reading his articles that he's a morning WO guy and that's why the majority of his nutrient timing revolves around C/P in the morning but I've read on more than one occassion in his articles that it revolves around training not time of day.
