Default Garage gym and training environment

Just curious if there is anyone else on here who has made their garage into a gym and what they have done to create a motivating environment? Have you found that color is really that important? I'm planning on having a stereo out there and some motivating pictures and quotes... Anything else in particular that you have found to be helpful?

Yup. I have a platform, a full werksan set, squat racks, and an ipod docking station to play tunes.

Personally, I prefer lifting with other people, so my garage has become secondary to where I'm currently training. YMMV.

I train at home about once a week. I prefer the gym, but I'm setup to play in the backyard or garage, depending on the weather. At home, I prefer outside, but I'll hit the garage if the weather's too bad.

I have a stereo, sandbags, heavy dumbbells, a sled, medicine balls, jumprope, etc. Nothing fancy.

Some of my motivation comes from the queer looks from my neighbors.

I would think music would help the most. I would imagine you use an iPOD or such in the gym? Having some tunes playing throughout the garage could work wonders.

When I work out at home by myself, which is most of the time, I find that having music makes a huge difference.

Not my garage, but my basement. I think I have all the necessary equipment for most workouts. There is a stereo and DVD player for music and entertainment as well as viewing demos.

I'll take a pic of my home gym once i get it cleaned up. I've got pretty much all strongman stuff in there, minus the things like a viking press, plus a power rack, band platform for deadlifting, etc.

I also belong to an oly gym in town, and also a gym to train events an hour away.

So excuse the horrible pic, but here's my new home gym! (well, minus the inside stuff...) Flipping tire is in the works.

What's motivating about a garage gym isn't what's on the walls or the music you play. It's in having all the equipment that YOU want and need exactly where you want it without the hassle of having to squeeze in a set of reverse crunches in between the pec deck and the neck machine in a commercial gym.

Garage gyms are for work, period, that's why people bother to set them up in the first place. They get sick of people in commercial gyms sitting on equipment watching the TVs. I get motivated just walking into my space because that's what I do there.

My home gym was great when I was getting my bench press up to the point where I wouldn't feel embarrassed using the bench at the gym with the bros. It's also great for rehabbing injuries. Lately I use my home gym mainly for dumbbell work because that area of the gym is full to capacity nowadays. I also ride the exercise bike a lot during football season while watching the games.

Interesting and so true. The space is set up for a workout, so that's what you do. No questions asked.

I loved my basement gym before I got divorced.

I had a cage, barbells, dumbells and a treadmill and exercycle. It was great.

The big thing was good music and my own space.

I train almost exclusively in my garage gym. The biggest factor in keeping myself motivated out there is, keep the area tidy. Don't let garage clutter creep into the training area. Nothing is more de-motivating than having to clear garage detritus off of the bench and platform in order to lift.

And, since we're sharing (there's a bench just outside of the shot) ...

Here's my garage gym. It's filthy, but i like it like that.

I have pretty much everything i need in here (minus bumper plates):

power rack, jesup barbell, and bench. Bands and jumpropes in the background.

dip station, lung breaker (Mark Bartley's prowler), and a fat bar

10" log, and a deadlift platform with band attachments:

2 kegs, a football/neutral grip bar, giant sandbag, atlas stones, cheap barbell for rack pulls, and a super yoke. I know it's a mess.

It's got to be damn tough to do intervals on that bicycle.

Some people like recumbent bikes. I prefer an inverted bike. For uphill training, you can flip it over.
