I'm having a bit of an argument with a friend who believes everybody's abs are shaped the same(or any other muscle for that matter) and the only thing different between people is the size. Is there any research that can prove the shape of the abs doesn't depend on the training methods applied to them and is genetic?

I don't know about research but you can look at pictures and see obvious differences in peoples abs.

Using your friend's logic everyone would look the same when they are born.

Well since igunick is in that kinda mood, i'd say this:

woah woah woah ab shape is obviously genetic. if everybody's abs are the same shape, why do you get a keg and i only get a 6 pack?

Guys you're preaching to the quier here... (spell? :/)
According to him basically the shape of your abs can be altered by the type of training you apply to them. If you train with specific exercises they'll grow in a certain way, and if you do with something else they will grow differently. This is obvious bullshit but I'm sure there's gotta be some article out there discussing this issue ;[
I used the most obvious example which is brad pitts abs that look all fucked up :/ YOU CANNO'T TRAIN TO MAKE YOUR ABS LOOK DIFFERENT. YOU CAN MAKE THEM BIGGER, MORE DEFINED WITH LESS BODY FAT BUT IF THEY'RE FUCKED UP THEY'RE GONNA STAY FUCKED UP AND IF THEY HAVE THAT COOL ELLIPTICAL SHAPE THEN THEY WILL STILL HAVE THE SAME SHAPE ONLY BIGGER.
Phew, glad I got that out!
Help, anyone? ;[ ;[ ;[

If you weren't born with the right ratio of muscle and tendon lengths, then you cant get a certain shape to your bicep. You CAN change the shape of your bicep, but only in terms of making it look bigger or different relative to the rest of the arm. Those are my thoughts.
