On the advice of many of you here, I worked up a change in my HIIT routines this weekend and put it into play this morning. Jumping rope. Wow! I knew I believed it to be one of the very best and hardest cardio trainers, but I must have forgotten how much so. It felt great!!!! Admittedly I had to start slowly and my active rest was actually a no jumping, jog in place, bring my heart rate back to earth effort, but I'll get up there. I don't think I'll have any problem torching that last bit a fat around the bottom of the abs if I keep this up for any amount of time.
Just had to share. Any of you that can jump rope for any period of time have my utmost respect, you are truly in shape. (picture me bowing down )

Congrats on tackling something that's deceptively difficult. I had a rough go of rope jumping when I started several months ago, but trust me, it gets better.

Irishdazza,
That's a pretty cool site. That video is amazing. You can definitely tell he's in shape. I hope I can get to that level some day. Wow! How'd you happen across that site? I'm bookmarking it.
Thanks!

OK, I used to think rope jumping was a good form of HIIT, but now.....
If you read my log and Capp's, Craig has stated that the key in intervals for fat loss is mechanical work against resistance done, not heart rate. We got into a discussion regarding ellipticals for intervals for fat loss (notice I say fat loss as opposed to other benefits like increasing lactate threshhold or training VO2max) and he said he didn't like them because there was generally no enough mechanical work load, the key factor in intervals for fat loss. Of course, I was stunned, having always equated HIIT with increased heart rate - but apparently the two aren't good proxies for each other. As a last shocker, he has me do 'complexes' at the end of my workout instead of regular running HIIT - 3 sets of 15 reps of something like 'The Bear' with only 60 seconds rest in between.
Anyway, I think jumping rope for aerobic work is increible, but now I wonder if it is a good form of HIIT. Maybe Craig will look at this thread and reply (esp. since I want to make sure I am understanding it correctly).

Ok, now we're getting into some good stuff. I'm very anxious to hear Craig's response. I hope he reads this.

Double unders or high knees have a high level of mechanical work- as do heels to ass, bells, slaloms and practically every other skipping variation - or do you mean something else when you say "jump rope"? (pictures non-challenging high jump)
Do a search on Buddy Lee for further demos of skipping that entail a high level of mechanical work.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a great believer in Tabata, but as alternative HIIT - I'm too much of a wuss to use it religously.
HIIT with a jump rope has enough variety, intensity and (important to me)enough of a technical challenge and learning curve, to maintain my interest.

Gymrat...
Believe it or not, I got there by Googling "Tabata Burpees"!
Pretty much anything by Ross is good and a slightly different emphasis from other sites.

I have been doing some burpees for HIIT and they are killers. Trying to do 4 minutes exercise bike then 10 burpees, then 60-90 seconds exercise bike then 10 burpees again for a total of 9.

Tried Tabata with them yet?
Many as you can for 20sec, 10sec rest. Repeat to a total of 4mins.
Your score is what you manage in the last 20sec...
....truly evil!
The bear is clean and snatch a barbell, lower it behind your head to your shoulders, squat, push press it, return it to the floor like the end of a deadlift.

Well, it's amazing when your body is in pretty decent shape how well it adapts. Today was my fourth day jumping rope and the first time I noticed that I didnt get as winded, I could do more, for longer. I didnt ache as much (calves) as the other days. My coordination is improving (less missing)and my speed is rapidly improving. Oh, and I'm sure my cardio health is greatly improving. what is it called.....???? Aw, crap.... Max Vo2 ??????? nah...

Jumping rope is one of the few 'pure' cardio exercises that I can stand lately without getting bored to tears! I'm not even CLOSE to Irish's video, but I'd like to think that I hold my own! I intersperse 5 minutes at a time or so inbetween ladder speed drills and light plyometrics, mostly.

Well at least I've got the same haircut and a T-shirt a bit like his !
You know when people say skipping isn't as good as x,y, z method of cardio....they aren't picturing skipping like that!
To be honest I'm way back on the curve at the mo, really struggle with my HIIT and the co-ordination goes quickly as I reach the limit on my stamina - my own fault for slacking off.
Another couple of weeks and I'll be back to good. Still can't do triple unders though...
