Default 3h/week in the gym lets you sit on your ass all day?

Think again! I read Rusty's blog post on walking today, he linked two research studies on walking:The 2nd one is a bit obvious, but the first one scares me a little, bad news for weekend warriors. I'm not the best at interpreting research studies, so any thoughts you have are welcome. In the meantime, start walking!

I'm 54 and have been on my feet and moving all my life (restaurant industry). I for one can attest to the effectiveness of walking more and sitting less. It's great for keeping energy levels up.

The down side is that I have to eat like a horse

There is another down side. I'm not good at sitting for very long. Makes sitting in theaters very uncomfortable. I need to shift or stretch out my legs every few minutes. My adductors hate me when I go to see a movie. As a matter of fact, after an intense sprint type workout, I get much better recovery the less I sit. Lying down is fine

I hate sitting, but my career revolves around computers so...

I end up doing something athletic nearly everyday and all weekend to make up for all my sitting time. I used to work with a guy who stood most of the day at his desk. Was funny to see all his monitors and keyboards on top of stacked phone books lol....

Shoulders were bumming me out at night from weight room/computer time. So discovered ledge where I could stand instead. Then feet bummed me out. Walking on treadmill at slow speed - forget it! Orthotics are on the way - hope I can start standing again.
