Default Trying new programs

Hi everyone,

I've been doing the same routine now for about 8 months with great success but my progress has slowed. The problem is, I'm a little timid to try new things. I've lost 25+ pounds and I think I've packed on about 10 pounds of muscle, so I probably lost 35+ pounds of fat. I feel and look stronger. And this program varies the excercises and reps regularly, so I'm not doing the same excercises over and over.

I guess I'm nervous to try something new when I've finally found something that worked so well for me, even though I'm plateau'ing.

Could anyone share some of their experiences for a little encouragement?

It sounds like you have made great progress so far. What is the current program you are on? Have you been doing the same basic exercises for the last 6 months? Take a look at the books New Rules of Lifting or Huge in a Hurry. They have some great programs that are overall full-body compound movements that can concentrate on either weight loss, strength, or muscle mass building. They recommend changing your program about every 6-8 weeks to keep the body from hitting plateaus and they keep the challenges fresh, which means keeping the progress going. I use a specific program for about 6 weeks, then I change to another completely different set of exercises. I don't mix up exercises week to week, I use a specific program for a period of 6 weeks and I hit it hard, (there is often an A, B, and C routine for Monday-Wed -Friday, or whatever). Then after 6-8 weeks I move to another set of exercises. You say you mix up the exercises, so maybe you need to stick with something specific for a while. Your body could be getting used to the same things over and over, but since it is not done repeatedly and intensely for a period of time (6 weeks) you aren't really bombing that exercise and getting a lot out of it. After 6 weeks of bombing your body with those exercises, they begin to adapt and they aren't as effective, so then is the time to hit it with completely new different exercises that your body is not used to.

If you've made the gains that you think that you have then you're going to slow down on progress, signifigantly. Rock on what you're doing until it just flat out doesn't work any more.

plateau - on the weight loss or on adding weight for your lifting?
If you vary the sets & reps regularly, how do you know you are plateau-ing?

Thanks everyone. I've seen the New Rules in the bookstore and it's on my "buy next" list. It may be that my current program does mix it up too frequently to see consistent gains. Even though I mix up the reps and types of excercises, I'm religious about logging every set. So I was able to see significant gains in both stamina and the amount of weight I could lift and now those kind of go up and down but trend flat.

I've also plateaued on the weight/fat loss. That might be natural, but I suspect I need to switch something up. My fear is that if I switch to something new for the sake of a breakthrough I might actually go backward. OK, my actual fear is that I'm one donut or two squat sets away from being fat again.
