Hello team!!

I wanted to ask you for your opinion on Body for Life... The book Body for Life takes a different approach than I am used to (HST cycles from thinkmuscle.com) in pushing high intensity with more sets (6). Body for Life Book also recommends doing workouts in the morning on an empty stomach. Supposedly plenty of people have had great success with this book, but from my research it is not favorable to work out on an empty stomach as for one your energy levels are low at max and you cannot lift as much and it doesn’t seem right to lift without nutrition (protein). Other question is that lifting so many sets seems wrong per recommendation for HST cycles. I do like the intensity of lifting heavy (to the max) with more sets—definitely this exhausts muscles more.

I am attempting to lose fat at this point as I bulked up a bit over the last few months and do not have chizzeled look (never really did, but I have weighed 15 lbs less a few months ago). Would you say that Body for Life is a better way to trim down and get leaner? I do not want to be big (though yes, for women this is hardly an issue)—I would like to lose about 20 lbs and look cut.

Appreciate all the advice!!

Anna

Then your experiences and research are the same as mine. I would NOT workout on an empty stomach, ever, even when cutting.

Anna, I don't know about BfL or HST specifically, but I do know that for fat loss, heavier weight is better because you'll see larger spikes in your heart rate. Also, if you're trimming away fat, you'd like nice hard muscles underneath, not hypertrophied, bloaty water filled muscles that come with higher rep lifting.

Have you considered doing workouts that combine heavy weight and low reps with fewer sets? I think Chad Waterbury has a workout like that at t-nation, but i can't find it. I remember reading it though:

It was three total body workouts - you would do one workout of 4 or 5 excercises at 3x5, and then a second workout of 3x8, and then back to 3x5 maybe, rounding off the week?

I wish i could find it, hope that helps a little though!

Anna, go over to the training log section and look up the Turbulence Training (TT) logs (especially Cappucino's log). If your going to invest in a program that should be the one.
