Mahler’s Monday Morning Motivator # 258 – Just Another Sunday Morning
Just Another Sunday Morning (05-11-09)
I get up on Sunday morning and it is a beauty. It’s a little cool, but the sun is casting its unhampered rays over the landscape. In short, it looks to be a sparkling day. I go through the weekend ritual of measuring out the vacuum-sealed coffee beans and put them in the grinder for that all important brew that replaces the instant crap that I drink during the week. There is nothing more pleasing to the nostrils than a pot of coffee working its wonders on the senses. As the coffee brews, I prepare my morning protein shake, laced with a teaspoon of creatine and drink it down. The taste will not compare to what is in store, a rich Columbian blend with a hint of vanilla.
When the coffee is ready, I pour a big mug and wander out to the deck for some quiet time. The cat will invariably follow and weave herself around my legs as I stand there taking in the morning. I am conscious of the soreness in my body brought on by the previous day’s work, which I like to call the “mulch mania.” The entire day on Saturday was spent shoveling and spreading the stuff, which rose like an Everest of dark, moist material in my driveway. It was but half eroded by my efforts and would demand my attention again today. But, for now, just a few moments to be alone with my thoughts until the air is filed with the sound of power mowers, barking dogs and children at play.
Soon, my wife will join me. We’ll have a relaxing breakfast on the deck and I will get ready for “mulch mania - part deux.” After all, Everest is waiting. I’ll pay a little more attention to putting on some sunscreen today, since my back and shoulders are shouting at me just a bit for neglecting them the previous day. So it’s down to the basement and a few quick reps at the power rack. For some reason, I just can’t seem to pass my equipment without pausing to crank out a set of something or other. There is a curious attraction there that cannot be denied.
Out to the shed and with wheelbarrow and shovel at the ready, I plan my attack. About six non-stop hours later, I am spent. A hot shower is going to feel so good and refreshing. I think about how tired I am, and yes, how sore. Hard work seems to amplify your awareness of every bone and joint in your body. Somehow that awareness seems right. But, you know what? I also think about the guys who hire someone to do this job for them or pay the nursery big bucks for their services, and, it’s not because they don’t have the time. Hell, I have as busy a schedule as the next guy. And for me, this was just another Sunday morning.
