Default Pull up bar - ideas?

I've been planning to install a pull-up bar in the basement or garage.

Anyone ever use one of these doorway versions? Useful, or trash? (I'm generally pretty skeptical about fitness gadgets, but you never know).

I'm perfectly fine with just going to the home center and buying some pipe and making one from scratch.

Iron Gym & UD6 were recently discussed here.

I'd go with the Iron Gym. Looks similar to that one, but not sure if that one is made the same or not. At any rate, the Iron Gym is the one my coach recommended and also uses. I love mine.

Thanks, all. $29 at Target sounds good to me! And thanks for the link, Lisa. I knew that had been discussed recently, but you obviously have much more skill than I do when it comes to massaging the search function.

I had a Door Gym for a while when I didn't have access to a real pullup bar, and it was awesome. I used it for pullups and ring dips/pushups.

I've never tried any of the other brands, but I imagine they're all pretty much the same, though they may differ slightly in their quality of construction.

I love my ion gym. I keep it all the time, even the kids are using it. It is one of the better $30 investments I have made.

I bought this one a couple years back...

http://www.newyorkbarbells.com/02001.html

Very, very sturdy. I weigh 210 lbs. and have loaded myself with 85 lbs. for negatives and it handles it easily.

Woohoo! Turns out Dick's had the Iron Gym for less than Target.

I have to admit I felt a little self-conscious picking out a box that was on the shelf right next to the Ab-Lounge, the Ab-Blaster, and some Thighmaster type thing. Yeesh.

Mine was delivered this morning, the box is very dodgy. Seems o.k in function though.

Yeah. It's definitely a cheapo item, but it's workable.

If you're super serious about wider grip pullups, the more expensive versions would be a better choice, but those are 3-4 times the cost when you add in shipping/handling.

The Iron Gym is good enough.
