I am 69.5 years old, and post mostly in bicycling forums.
However, I try to maintain fitness from a variety of dimensions.
Right now, I swim (like 4-5 times per week, about 45 minutes), bicycle (about 3,500 miles per year), do a lot of varied weight lifting (free weights and machines - i.e, weighted dips at 45 lbs, followed by 20 pushups, and a lot more, 3-4 times per week), balancing training, stretching and walking (2-3 miles)
I am also currently studying for Personal Fitness Training Certification through AFAA.
I looked for a "senior's" forum, and didn;t find one. Is there a special place where seniors (I prefer 55+) might sort of hang out?
Thanks for reading the post. I don't quite know where to post this, so please move it as necessary.
You got me by 0.45 years! Welcome aboard. Don't swim much anymore but a fair amount of bicycling and lots of weightlifting (free wts). Also like to sprint.

You guys ever consider a forum/thread/whatever just for 55+ folks?? Like this one?
Hey. Mahler here.
I am 60.
While a "seniors" forum might be desirable, you will find that it is very motivating to be a part of the regular forums and in touch with what everyone is doing. The folks on here have never, ever treated me like I had to have special considerations because I was an older lifter. You sound like a dam fit guy for pushing 70, so you may have a thing or two to show these young pups.
And, Fitguy0916, if that is you in your avatar, you are in great shape.
My heartiest welcome to both of you.

It looks like there are a few "more mature" folks on this forum.
Right now, I am busy studying for my AFAA Personal Fitness Trainer Certificate (did I say that already?)
Next Monday, a trainer friend of mine (he is 63) is going to work with me to show me some "Extreme" work out techniques. I feel that my muscles ar not getting challenged - they are getting a bit bored. A new routine is always fun and is in order.
Another avocation of mine is singing, and I started and coordinate a men's a cappella gospel singing group. We sing all over the place, including the "Summer Gospel Fest" at Calhan, CO, June 25-28, where bands from all around the region join together for four days of singing and playing, workshops, etc. We range fro 64 - 79 years old.
I have been able to lose about 4 pounds gained during a recent illness and traveling. That feels good. Now I need to lose about 10 pounds more and I wil be "perfect" for me!!
I'm not 50+ (although I will be in less than 10 years)... but fwiw, my workout partner is going to be 75 this month. He runs me into the ground (seriously)! Welcome to the forums!
I think most of us forget the ages of many on this forum. Knowing Rob and John (Mahler) personally -- and for a few years -- I'd say they workout harder, eat better, and live heartier than guys years younger. They are an inspiration to the rest of us, as are so many others here.

I'm 66 and I once thought that a Senior's Forum would be desirable, but I have since concluded that when it comes to fitness, sticking with your "fitness" peers is much better than your "age" peers. The fitness bar is set so low for guys in their 60's and beyond that those of us who are in good shape and have been working out for decades have little in common with our "age" peers.

Actually, I once started a "Senior Fitness Forum" on Yahoo Groups, and advertised it around a bit.
The premise was that "seniors" could actually do things as regards exercise and fitness besides hold hands in groups doing something like the "Hokey Pokey" - (you put your right foot in, you put your right foot out, etc.)
What I got, to my surprise and delight, was a bunch of top-ranked senior athletes from all across the country - swimmers, runners, bicyclists, etc.
We kept it going for a couple of years, and then it sort of folded up. It is still there (I think).
Today, I met with a friend who is an excellent certified personal trainer (63 years old and years of experience) and we devised a new routine for me, which is going to be very challenging, emphasizing muscular endurance more than I have in the past, and some plyometrics. Sometimes it helps to have someone look over your rut, and bring some fresh thoughts in.
My muscles were simply too adjusted to what I had been doing the past year, and they needed a change.
I will keep doing my cardio as I have in the past (swimming, bicycling, walking fast) and my stretching.

I agree completely. Part of what motivates me is working alongside the twentysomethings at the gym and being able to do what most of them can do.
This is good to find, because I just started a thread about weightlifting at older ages; I was interested to find out what people can do into their 60's, 70's, and 80's. LisaS linked me to this thread, but if you would like to see what's going on in the other, it's here. My husband is a couple years shy of 60, and has pretty bad arthritis (ankylosing spondylitis, if any of you know what that is), so probably can't do deadlifts/squats, stuff like that, but he's been lifting weights for a long time, albeit the same routine for years and years, so no more progress. He did do very heavy lifting in his 20's, before the arthritis hit.
If you keep this thread going, I'll be watching it.
Welcome to the forum. As many have said we don't really think that much about age or gender. The similarities far outweigh the differences. One of the nice things about this forum is that posters are polite and serious about lifting and about making friends here and having fun.
Welcome and I look forward to seeing more of your posts.
Cheers
peter

Still interested in an all-round fitness forum - i.e., swimming, walking, bicycling, resistance training, flexibility and the like - all combined in one forum.
Also new here. In 2 weeks I'll turn 61. I can't remotely compete with a couple of the avatars, but I've finished 2 marathons in 2009, ride my bike to and from work regularly and still do pull-ups.
Only question I have about this site is that it seems kind of serious. I'm rather a wise-ass and enjoy boards that encourage snarkiness. If I want support and unconditional love I'll talk to my wife where that stuff flows like a river.
Snoop around some; I've certainly seen a lot of snarkiness and wiseass cracks! Mostly in training logs, probably. Phaedrus49 and Cynic come to mind. . . . .
Thanks, I've always thought training logs were a good idea, but never been much good at keeping one. Just count the days worked and hope to hit 312 (6x52) for the year.

Ha! I think you'll fit in just fine around here! Welcome!

I'm new so still on my best behavior.
However, I post on a political board where I hold the record for infractions.

Oh, yeah, the guys around here are rilly serious. Take a look at Off Topic.
Welcome, we can always use a new wise ass when Phaedrus or Ninja are off harassing people on Facebook.

I look forward to you feeling comfortable around here!
The good thing about the snarkiness and humor around here is that it is just that,in fun, and I haven't seen the meanness/jerkishness that one can find on other boards.
Anyway, I'm not over 55 yet but I will be 47 in a month, and I am in the best shape of my life thanks in large part to these boards. The mix of ages and backgrounds is one of the best things about it.

Wait until you get to know us better. We are the "Inglorious Bastards" of fitness.
