Hi there
I am on the shorter side, standing at 5'8 and kinda stocky built so I was advised not to go for a lot of mass. This would eventually make me look shorter. What kind of principles would I have to use? I normally train with the 4-6 rep range, and have gotten good bulk, for someone who has the genetics working against them ( both my parents are quiet short, and not very athletic when younger) I need to be carefull. Going to start TAP once again, after one false start. Any pointers?

Who advised you not to go for a lot of mass because it makes you look shorter? You don't need to train any differently because you're short, just train like a normal guy who is 3 inches taller than you.
Well...I have seen very muscular guys who do kinda look short...besides, one day I would like to model( More print than catwalk). Nothing fancy, just to see if I can do it.

depends what type of modeling you want to get into. fitness, fashion, commercial etc...each caters to a different market of clients and use a different image. I personally don't beleive in "bulky" muscle, you will look bigger then a taller guy quick because you do have shorter muscles but your either building muscle or you arn't. your genetics will determine the shape of your muscles. in any type of modeling though you do want to very low bodyfat. i would suggest you research the type of modeling you want to do before you train hard in the gym because then you may have to have a different look for the market you want to work in.

I think short is just a perception of balance. Someone with a shorter neck will appear to be shorter than someone with a longer neck (in a BB's case bigger traps could cause that look as well). Similarly wider across the shoulders and chest also make you look shorter since your proportions are off.
I can guarantee you, as someone who has hired hundreds of models and evaluated thousands, that genetics is the first and most important determinant of whether you'll succeed.
Modeling is about reflecting light. It's about proportions and angles, none of which you can change dramatically through training.
Low body fat is certainly important -- I'd put that second, after genetics -- but most of us could get super-lean and still not look very good in front of a camera. And some models with great genetics are able to get work even without super-low body fat because of the way their fat is distributed.
Life isn't fair, and modeling follows the same principle. Some really good-looking people don't photograph well. Some really fit guys end up with muscles that don't look good through a camera lens.
My advice (for what it's worth): If people have been telling you since puberty that you ought to be a model, then you have a chance to succeed. If you don't hear this on a regular basis -- especially from photographers and others in the business -- I wouldn't waste time on it. Getting in great shape is always a worthy goal, but doing it in hopes of a career in modeling is a whole 'nother issue.

I wish I had a fullbody pic so you can see if he looks too short.
I'm not really sure you can get an accurate guage on how someone looks in the real world from a picture anyhow. Unless you have a picture of them in a group of people or something, and even then, without definite points of reference there could still be weird camera angles at play.

Does it count if the person telling me I should be a model is me, right after I finish my morning pose down infront of the mirror?
"Damn you look good!"

My advice, listen to Lou - the man knows what he speaks. Plus, he wrote the book you are getting your workout (TAP) from, so...
