My son is about to turn 11 and all he can talk about are the signs at the Y saying he is allowed in the weight area at 11 with supervision. He thinks this means he is ready for a full on weight program.

My wife and I lift regularly, but primarily our focus is on outdoors activities. Mountain biking, hiking, running, etc. My son has been going with us on and off for a couple years. He doesn't seem to mind, but he never really asks to go and do activities like this. I have never seen him actually push something like he has been pushing to start lifting. I am really glad he is so interested, but worried because I don't know if it is good for him, or how to go about starting him. However I don't want to waste his enthusiasm.

Up until now, he does body weight exercises, pushups, sit-ups, etc. He can run about 2 miles (slowly) without stopping (sometimes.) He is physically in good shape.

Is there any good information out there on how to go about this? Or does anyone have a good idea how to start? I was always told lifting too early would stunt growth, but that was back in the days of high school and mis information. However my son is very small for his age.

I was thinking the best thing to do might be to just get him in there and let him play around some. Show him some proper form, let him hang out with us, but not start a full on program yet. Does that sound reasonable? Or am I way off track here?

Here's an excerpt of the book that discusses briefly the basic guidelines for a children's resistance-training program.
