Just was wondering if anyone's seen a pickup in gym activity now that we're firmly in 2009. Sparkpeople seems to be really slow today, so I'm guessing it's part of this year's resolutioneers. What's happening in your neck of the woods?

Tom, I'll report back this evening. My plan is to go the hospital and then hit the gym to work of this incredible stress I am feeling for today's meeting. It's Monday and the New Year....I'm thinking this might be an interesting night at the gym! I'll let you know!
It's even busy at my home gym. I had to wait 30 minutes for my wife to finish with the stationary bike.

I've noticed a pickup at my gym. Saturday there was two more people there than usual (which makes the total 3 people, including myself) LOL.
This morning seemed to be a little busier. I don't think it's resolutioners as much as it is snowbirds from winter climates making their way into town now.
What I've seen more of is new members joining up changing gyms after they get sick of the "meet market" atmosphere at their old place.
I work at a hospital gym. So far today we have already had about 2/3rd of our usual daily sign in. We've been open 5 hours and have 8 more to go and mornings are generally slow. We've had 2 people ask about signing up so far as well.
Just the first day back. I expect about a 30-40% increase by closing time.
I was down at the corporate gym, not to work out, but to get some paperwork taken care of. Definitely new faces, including some people I know outside the gym that I'd yet to see IN the gym.

On the bright side, the gym needs members to stay open. Was just reading a post on another forum about someone who's gym went belly up. Now she has no where to w/o.
Lots of cardio equipment hogging, lots of people wandering around looking lost, lots of plates dropped and left on bars in the free weights. Macho strutting weekend warriors / resolutioners creatively using machines / weights... Oh yeah - they're ALL out here!
Oh - and one guy today doing AWESOME pin front squats and then side-to-side squats with nearly perfect form. I wanted to talk to him but his tunez were cranked and he wasn't making eye contact with anyone...
Apparently costco is running a special for 24 hour fitness. Time to break out the "squat cage/rack is bad for your knees" story. . Anyone care to fill out the details of this story?
Saturday was absolutely horrible and today was just as bad. I can't wait for it to die down. I will say that I do enjoy the extra entertainment during cardio time.

this one time, at strongman camp, a guy's patella snapped off, sailed across the field, and put some guy's eye out!

YEs! "The Squatting Sentinel will come out and blow your kneecaps off with a shotgun if he spots you squatting with bad form. "
Don't they have a daily $10 surcharge and individual testing required in order for the insurance company to allow squatting at that gym?
"Squatting puts pressure on your pancreas and gives you cancer."
tons of people at the gym last night...seems like they all coordinated the time of arrival so they would all be there together...good thing thats not my normal gym hours, just for this week. too many people just standing around not having a clue in the world on what to do.
did talk to a couple guys who seem interested though, hopefully they stick it out

It's been pretty crowded at the YMCA for a few weeks with students on break and people off of work during the holidays. Last night was the most crowded I've ever seen it. Of course, I went to the gym at about 6:30. That is primetime, especially for 1st timers. It would be nice to see all of those new memberships result in the purchase of another squat rack or 3. I doubt it, though.

More likely it'd go to more treadmills and/or stability/bosu balls.

I have not seen as many new people as I expected to. We started to have some new folks just before the New Year but not many since. Then again I work at 5 AM so they may come in later in the day. Or it could be Rob is right and people are now saying they can't afford a membership even though we have a Month to Month gym in town with several locations that charges just under 20 bucks.
my gym being in my home hasn't seen an increase (not even me yet ) but I do notice a BIG upswing in the "bring your own lunch" crowd and competition for counterspace and microwaves in the kitchen at work. And my guess is that these are new year diet-driven rather than economic driven.
Last night some fucker was squatting in my curl rack!
