Just curious... has anyone found a particular type of shoe is better for weight training? Usually I tend toward the ones marketed as "cross-training" (and on sale!) but I was wondering if basketball, running, tennis, or some other style might be better.
I think stability and adequate cushioning would be important, but anyone have any opinions here?

I wear cross trainers too, but that's just because they're the only pair of athletic shoes that I own.
There are all kinds of guys and preferences here -- I've heard of them wearing tennis shoes, basketball shoes, sandals, or go barefoot. Not sure if I've ever seen any studies or science on the topic.

Nice, Ninja!
In fact, when I compare your shoes to your bike ( http://forums.jpfitness.com/noncgi/u.../t/003939.html ), it becomes very clear why your running was the strong point of the triathlon.

I wear cross trainers for most lifts, and Converse Chuck Taylor's for squats and deadlifts.

Red.
If you look at Nick's Tri pics tho he's not wearing those sneakers...
To answer the question:
I like to wear medium height basketball sneakers while I'm lifting. THey're nice and light and when I'm doing squats or anything they feel like they give me a some ankle support...

I have a pair of New Balance cross-trainers for all gym work. Wide base, cushioning, good heel cup. I feel I put my relatively weak ankles at risk wearing treaded sneakers in the gym.

I lift wieghts in boxer shorts and combat boots. Brings out the animal-freak in me
just kiddin'
Actually my pair of sketchers are getting pretty worn out and this question has crossed my mind before. I'll look into some cross trainers when I get some extra $$

I originally wore cross trainers to lift, but then I tried using my tennis shoes for squats/deadlifts and loved it because of the flat bottom really letting me push up with all parts of my foot

Cross trainers for me too. Right now I'm wearing a pair of Nike Shox. They're not bad.

I lift barefoot 100% of the time. If you have access to a private gym, this is the way to go. It feels great doing squats and deadlifts this way...

I don't bother having specific shoes - I just use old running shoes that aren't being run in anymore (but not the OLD old ones that I spend 3 hours per week chasing the lawnmower around in ...hehheh)

hm..I'll have to try the barefoot thing. It would suck to drop a 45 plate on my foot though...

It wouldn't not suck to drop a 45lb plate on your foot with shoes either, unless said shoes are steel-plated.

Now THAT would be a sight to see!
It never would have occurred to me to lift barefoot as several mentioned. I'm clumsy enough that I know I'd stub my toe on a bench leg, the squat cage, etc.
