Default Most rediculous thing I have ever seen.

Easily the most rediculous thing I have ever ever ever ever witnessed with my own eyes at the gym.

I get there and I cant find a single 45 plate. I look over and see this couple, lets call them "Skinny fat with ponytail dude" and "Just fat chick with flaming du rag" at the leg press. This machine has 4 poles for plates, every single one is capped. 44 plates were on this machine.....44! The guy is wearing boat shoes with no socks and proceedes to attempt to move the stack to no avail for only 3 F'en seconds. He then asks the chick to sit on the machine cause its not heavy enough. Rests 15 min, then does it again. Someone asked what he was doing during my set across the way, I didnt hear all of it, but I heard the word "power" and "metal strength" at leat 5 times each.

.....and then they go to the smith. Dude puts 5 plates on each side, kid has to be maybe 140 with rocks in his pockets....does the same shit.

6 more months of this bullshit.

hahahaha. thats pretty good. I saw a similar feat of leg strength just the other day with the leg press machine.

this one is my new favorite - at the gym my mom goes to.. there is a guy who stands on top of a stability ball for time. Wearing a full faced hockey helmet and upperbody pads..

Surely I can't be the only one thinking this....

Does he practice saying, "Give me that fat tank of gas." while on the ball?

probably the worst example of plate-hogging I've ever seen was on the calf raise machine. A normal-sized guy obviously determined that the 200 lbs provided were far less than his upper limit so he places 3 45 lb plates on top of the machine at head level. (not fastened or anything). Dangerous for him and anyone who walks by (side of the machine was along an aisle)

This was the only act of gym nonsense that has ever caused me to interrupt a workout and leave the gym. (I left because I will never criticize anyone in a gym - but I was so close in this circumstance)

Wait. So he was doing an isometric exercise? Why didn't he just push against a wall?

Afraid he was going to move it?

ANYONE WHO STANDS ON TOP OF A STABILITY BALL DESERVES TO FALL OFF!

And this post makes me laugh because it conjures up such fond memories of gyms I've trained at in the past. I miss the people-watching. I train clients in their homes now so don't get "entertained" by such antics!

I'll never forget this one woman at the first gym I worked at...she was shorter than myself...under 5 feet for sure...nice lady and all, but this one particular day I was lifting with my partner and we look over and she'd loaded up the leg press (what's up with that?) with like 5 plates on a side. I remember looking over at my training partner and we shared the "eyebrows up" look, then watched as she undid the catches and proceeded to perform presses that I swear were only a few inches deep. She was reppin' em out, too!

I recently blogged about a dude I nicknamed "Kilmanjaro" at another gym. He was into the strongman training. Nothing against that, it's just that when you're in a packed Monday evening gym, witnessing a 6-foot plus tall dude heave and hold a 100+ lb dumbbell over his head while screaming at the top of his lungs is rather entertaining. Made my clients ask questions, that's for sure.

And then there was the "lumberjack guy"...oh wow...I could go on and on and on...

A few years back we had a couple who was weird. The woman would sit sowwhere and read the bible while the guy would load up the smith machine or leg press and do super short movements with a million pounds. Gyms are like high school, you always have the same assortment of different characters.

Most of my workouts are on a campus gym. Aside from the tools that wear shirts that have sleeves that are cut all the way to the bottom of their shirts or wear cargo pants and polos covered in their Abercrombie necklaces/cologne there are just some plain idiots up there.

The other day there was a guy deadlifting who would stand up with the bar and no matter what weight or number of reps he was doing he would just drop the bar from waist height. Not a 'controlled drop' like we do in powerlifting, he would simply let go then reach down and pick it up again.

Also we had a two guys come in to workout last week with a video camera. They were talking smack and yelling into the camera then they would bench then yell at the camera again. I hope they post the vid on youtube so show someone how awesome they are, I really want to find it.

reading this again reminded me of an extension to steves leg press story.

this kid had a ton of plates on the leg press, i dont know how many, but i am sure it was about 2000lbs worth. He goes to take the plates off and takes them all off of ONE SIDE. sure enough the whole leg press flips over, was loud as hell and took a good hour for a group of guys to get everything back correctly.

I train in a fairly hardcore gym.. this one Dan/Son combo is the only one that cracks me up. Yesterday they where doing squats and had on 4 or 5 hundred pounds on the bar. Calling it a 1/4 squat would be giving them to much credit. with a full rounded, knee wraps (over top of jeans..), the tampon looking pad on the bar, and the spotter doing at least half of the work.

these guys are funny..
