Default Non "workout" activity?

Like many of you I tend to get depressed in the winter and feel couped up. I'm single and tend to need something to do on the weekends to get out of the house. Fortunatly I am a member at a really big nice YMCA where I live and sometimes go there to shoot hoops or wander the halls aimlessly. Saturday I did a light recovery type workout with light sets of 20 reps on few movements then attempted to practice soccer even though I don't really know what I'm doing. I started playing dodgeball on Monday nights and it's a blast. In January I'll be playing indoor soccer and dodgeball.

What do you all like to do for recreation besides structured training?

I've been thinking about this a lot, as I want to do more activity without it having to be a specific workout. I do karate 2-3 days/week, which is a good workout... I also have added more hiking and taking the dog for a walk, just to get moving and use the body that I've worked so hard to make healthy and capable of activity. I've looked into joining a rec league for softball (if I could find the time)...

Good question Jon - looking forward to seeing what others do for fun activity...

I like to do things outdoors, but it can get pretty nasty here in the Northeast in winter, and I don't ski as much as I used to. But I do enjoy ice skating. There's a nearby rink, it's cheap, I can go on a weeknight as well as weekends, I don't have to drive for hours, book a motel room and pay top dollar for a lift ticket.

Isn't that supposed to be part of the fun?

Skiing!! I LOVE to ski! I live extremely close to a TON of mountains. I just bought a brand new pair of Salomon Temptress twin-tip skis and as soon as they come back from the shop where the bindings are being mounted I'm planning on hopping right on em and skiing like crazy!

I live in New England and I figure, if I can't beat the snow, why not join (and love) it?

Cool, I think that is my goal this winter. Lisa (gf) wants me to snowboard, so that might happen as well, but I personally think X-country will be cool.

I used to do it as a child/teen. When I was fat. hahhahahah.

So now what do I do now?

Well my hobby is medieval sword fighting with rattan swords, except I am lazy and haven't fought or practiced at all.

I hike in the nearby woods with a long-legged dog and do yoga when the weather is too nasty.

I'm wanting to buy a rowing shell and hit some of the northern WI lakes (Winnebago or Green Bay), but they are expensive. Perhaps on a EOY corporate bonus + tax return sometime in the next five.

What about a kayak? Like a cheap fiberglass one, the $400 range like on REI?

Might be a cheaper way to get on the water for the time being.

Two things I've been wanting to do is snowshoeing and Muy Thai...we will see if it happens this winter.

I do ski in the winter but the Northeast is difficult for outside activities.
