Default Mahler’s Monday Morning Motivator # 238 – Two Important Words

Mahler’s Monday Morning Motivator # 238 – Two Important Words

Two Important Words
(11-24-08)

You are driving blissfully down the road and come to an intersection. The traffic is rather heavy and, try as you might, there is just no way you are going to get out into the flow without a subsequent call to your insurance agent. Vehicle after vehicle races by and you practically give yourself a neck injury from constantly turning your head to look back and forth for some opportunity. And then, without warning, it happens. You look one more time and a car slows down. Perhaps you see the headlights flash, but there is a universal and unspoken signal that someone is going to give you a break and let you out into traffic. You pull out in front of your anonymous benefactor and with a wave of the hand or perhaps a few short toots on the horn you express your gratitude.

That wave of the hand; those few staccato blasts of the horn and possibly an internal thought about the person behind the wheel of that other vehicle all say two important words. Thank you.

I ask you to take a moment and think about the many famous names that you know, be they the names of politicians, athletes, entertainers, artists, scientists, authors, or any of a thousand professions. These people of note have obviously made some impression, for good or ill, on your life or why would you even know their names? Yet, in a very real sense, that anonymous person in the car behind you, may have done more for you with a simple gesture than any of the luminaries that come to mind. As your frustration increased, you may have just decided to gun the engine and take a chance to get out into the traffic. That faceless, nameless person may have just saved your life.

There are, I am certain, countless unsung acts of kindness, worthy of our thanks that occur throughout our lives. And, there are, I am equally certain, many nameless, or at least less than famous people who make a difference every single day. Make it a point to use those two important words on them, every chance you get.

And, my friends, to you, the many that I know and the anonymous readers that make my weekly mental journeys all worth while, thank you.

This world would be a better place is we all as a society tried to be that person for someone else.

Instead all to often I find people wander around in their little bubble. Walking down a busy street they will just stop without a care for what goes on around them.

Remember your fellow man, we are all in this together.

We have a nasty junction right outside our work, I always try to give atleast 1 car enough room to pullout.

All the best for Thanksgiving, John.

Thank You

Younger, I always thought I had to be a nurse or a doctor to do something "important" in the world...to make people's lives better. But I know better now. How often I've driven through a toll booth and been amazed at how the collector can brighten my day just by being nice. Or the guy packing groceries. Or the clerk at the town offices. My conclusion...you make just as much difference by being decent in everyday situations as you might in a crisis of life and death.

Yesterday some guy started honking and waving frantically at me at a stop light. When I rolled down the window he yelled to me, "check your back tire, it's almost flat!" Good thing...by the time I pulled over it was completely flat. I'd have never known!
