learned in my class it is 205(for male, female=220)-Age=MHR
then take MHR x .60 or .70 or .85 for the level of fitness you are.
but i dunno...just wait for one of the veterans to answer your question. i think theres another formula (carbon formula or something)

Get a heart rate monitor. It can measure your heart rate and be set to show when you are above or below your target rate. Also, that old formula for maximum heart rate has been shown to be flawed.

Jimbo,

From personal experience I recommend the Polar heart rate monitor. It comes with a sensor on a strap which you place around your chest and a watch that measures the heartrate. There are many different models to choose from where the watch will count your calories, store workout info, trend progess, etc. I purchased the $80.00 one which has the strap but the watch only counts heartrate, not calories burned and will only store one workout log. I like the sensor on the strap because a lot of cardio equipment is "Polar ready" which means the treadmill / eliptical /etc machine will pick up your pulse from the sensor and display it on the machine itself so you dont have to look at the watch.

Hope this helps.

Mac

Forgot the link.

You may go higher or lower in features, but I recommend this one for overall quality and features.
