Wow, I'm not sure if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery or plagiarism. What a total ripoff - I hope the Crossfit guys gave their authority to do that piece.
Galya and Milko, Xfit does have the kettlebell swings with 2 hands also.... especially if you don't have a kettlebell and are using a DB as a sub.
It seems Coach Glassman had nothing to do with it but Andy Petranek, who runs a Xfit affiliate gym in Santa Monica, was behind the piece.
Here's his comments from crossfit.com:

Here's some background on the MJ piece... I worked a lot with Roy Wallack on the article. He is a good friend of mine from my adventure racing, Eco Challenge days. After opening Petranek Fitness, I started pitching him on an article on CrossFit. I FINALLY got him out to one of my workouts and he fell in love with it. He must have interviewed 5 or 6 people on the spot about their CrossFit experience.
Still, it took another 8 months to get a magazine (MJ) to agree to an article. Roy and I then sat down to try to figure out how to bring as much as possible of the CrossFit "cult" to the MJ readers and also provide them with the meat or juice of the workouts.
We started out creating a 30 day program including as many of "the girls" as possible (in their original form - unmodified.) In fact, we were even going to put the "world record" times in there to give people a context for their own performance. Included with this was going to be the recommendation to scale the workout as needed to match personal ability.
Enter the world of nationally syndicated media. Space requirements, and the need to satisfy the majority of their readers with simplicity, changed our original plans drastically. Cut back to 10 workouts, take out "the girls", and make it so that no modification was needed (or as little as possible).
I was there for the photo shoot - did the best I could making a non-CrossFitting model look the part of a CrossFitter. I even explained that the fake smile on his face in each of the shots was as inauthentic as the lack of sweat on his body... to no avail.
I didn't see a thing until the article came out on Friday - as far as I can tell, they only made one mistake in the workout program - on workout #4, they indicate doing 5 box jumps instead of 15.
I agree with a lot of the sentiment voiced already in your comments - the article isn't perfect. Could have included a whole lot more! In fact, it probably should be a full length article, accompanying a 30-day program. But I do think it presents a good starting point for many people. Some will try it, love it, find their way to the site and continue - others will fall by the wayside... just the way it goes.
I'm really excited that we were able to get a publication like MJ to publish as much as it did without editing the workouts, completely bastardizing it as Outside Magazine did about 18 months ago.
Thanks Greg - just saw that after Q directed me there. Bummer - I also am getting impatient, since you havr already rushed ahead and successfully done muscle-ups - I wanted to be the first guy here!
Or you could be cool like me and tie dumbbell handles to the roof.
Ok so maybe that's not THAT cool. But whatever!
hahahhahah

Yes, I am hoping to have the Elite Rings shipping out the week of January 16-20. Production is going well right now.
I've talked to Greg Glassman and he was very happy with the Men's Journal article. It was done with their full cooperation. It sounds like his website traffic has increased significantly in the past several weeks, so it must be doing something.
Anything would be an improvement over that New York Times piece. But I actually think the author did a really good job on the Men's Journal article. He accurately described the basics of what their workouts are all about, which is a hard thing to do. The smiling model was not great, but not unexpected either
It would be a good marketing deal to have JP have them at his gym Tyler. He gets in 20-30 forum members every year for his retreat, of which at least 6 are currently doing Crossfit. It could be money well spent to send him a pair.

PS: JP, at this point Kuri, I, HR, Q, and Bill just live here. We workout over there.
I had to run away from there because sometimes, some people who do Crossfit don't split deep enough on their split cleans, and I didn't want it to rub off on me. Also, one time someone didn't completly lockout while doing ring muscle-ups, I hear this shows a defficency in strength or form. Having a fear of defficency, makes me think maybe I should return my rings.[I hope everyone can properly imagine the tone with which I would verbalize these statements.]
Tyler, it is too bad your rings didn't get a picture and an aside in the article.
Did anyone notice the models front squat form during the thruster. Those bulging biceps must really hamper flexability. All in all I don't think it was a bad article. It mentions twice about attention to form, a much different side than the NYT article. The smiling model gives the impression that the workouts are fun in a fun way rather than fun in a painful kind of way. It will give Crossfit a lot of attention, and maybe teach some people some new exercises and methods. But most people don't want to give up the typical split. And even for those who do, there will be another workout in next months publication that will recapture most all of the MJ readers.

Someone on this forum needs to come up with an "instant graemlin" denoting heavy sarcasm/irony. The rolly eyes one is close but not quite it. Any suggestions anyone? Maybe post 'em under a new topic in the appropriate forum.
