Default Mahler's Monday Morning Motivator # 224 - There Will Be No More Miracles

Mahler's Monday Morning Motivator #224 - There Will Be No More Miracles

Note: I am on vacation and doing a little cheating. I wrote this piece a few years back during the Winter Olympics when the US first decided to field a professional hockey team. To my knowledge it has never been published as a motivator. Much of it still holds true today.

THERE WILL BE NO MORE MIRACLES(08-11-08)

There will be no more Miracles.
There will be no more Davids standing resolute, but trembling, before Goliath.
There will be no more winning at all cost, where cost was measured in spirit, determination and sacrifice and not in dollars and cents.
The line between the amateur and the professional has not only blurred, it has all but disappeared in organized sport.
There was a time when success in sports was measured by goals and assists; runs batted in; yards gained.
Now, in this time, our time, it is measured by how many millions a player will be paid; how many endorsements he puts his name to.
The erosion of the ideals of the Olympics, and indeed all sports, paints an ever-saddening picture, and what happened in 1980 is a fond memory that will never be repeated.
How tragic that the amateurs must sit on the sidelines, while the professional athletes garner even more glory and fame. Their brief moment in the sun has been cast into shadow.
Yes, there will be contests won, records broken, medals awarded, but it will never be the same; it can never be the same.
You cannot return to what once was from what is, but only move on to what will be.
And what will there be?
There will be no more miracles.
It is one of the reasons I treasure the many friends I have made on this forum; people who get up early, make time for their families, work hard, play hard, give their all and give back much of what they have learned, freely and without thought of gain.
Behind the many posts are unknowns in garages and basements, in health clubs and gyms, on the track at the local high school or running through their neighborhood.
There they find no crowds, no cheers, no adoring fans.
There is no finish line or medal.
There is only the next day and the day after that.
These are my heroes.
Yes, there will be no more miracles.
Or, my friends, take a look in the mirror.
Perhaps, there already are.

Have a Great Week!

Really good, John.

I think you may perhaps of posted this one at some point, though, because I remember having these lines as my sig line for a while:

"There is no finish line or medal.
There is only the next day and the day after that."

Nonetheless, it's one of your most fluent and poetic Motivators!

I share your thoughts on this John - it's funny but it bothers me most with hockey, basketball, and (to an extent) tennis - the sports I most associate with a professional aspect.

There has always been tension between the athletic-machines of the old USSR/East German block and the ones now in place in China (that is, edging towards the "professional") and the more individualized sport traditions in the West - but the out and out recruitement from professional sport teams bothers me on a different level - especially when the West/USA participates.

---
to your 2nd point - +1 on the heroes that we see every day on the street and in the gym.
