Default 5x5 routine

when starting a 5x5 routine how do you calculate your starting weight.? if you can complete all 5 sets with a given weight do you increase the weight immediately at your next workout or do you use that same weight for the rest of the week.? also, do calves respond better to light/heavy weight loads.?

How many times a week are you doing 5x5 on the same exercise?

You'll probably have to experiment the first week to gauge what weight to use. If you start with a weight that has you grinding by the second set, it's probably too much. If you feel like you could rip off 10-12 of the starting weight, it's likely too little. Don't stress out about it though. In the process of finding the "right" weight, you're still getting some work done!

I'd recommend fluctuating a bit within a week, or it may be a little hard on you. In other words, plan a day when you go all-out for the 5x5, and another day when you plan on doing only a % of your heaviest day.
