Did this exercise today and totally got pwned. I had trouble getting my legs high enough, and could only do 5 each leg before I had to rest. (If you're wondering what the exercise actually is, it's kind of like pedaling a recumbent bike, except you're vertical, not horizontal.) Not sure if it's a flexibility/range of motion issue or if it's a strength issue. Any ideas how to get better at this exercise? (Apart from keeping doing it of course... ). Thanks in advance for replies.

Yes, but why? (in the more philosophical sense when related to training)
To do more dedicated core work I'd guess - I'd have to ask him why he included it. We actually started the workout doing side V-ups, so I'm guessing this was for the lower abs. I'll write him and find out.

It's probably a strength issue. That's an unnatural movement unless you're a can can dancer or kneeing someone in the groin.
I'm not sure about the pushing your legs down part, since there's nothing to push against. Do mean that you slowly lower them?
He might mean it as an ab exercise. A precursor to a bent knee leg raise (both legs at once) on the chair, which is a precursor to a straight leg raise.

If he knew why, he wouldn't need the trainer.
The way I understand it, he wanted me to lower each leg, using my muscles to extend the leg as it came down so it would end up straightened but not straight vertical (feet under my body) - rather my foot would be about a foot or so ahead of my torso. Not sure if that description is clear or not but that's the best way I can think to describe it atm.
