Ok, so I box twice a week with a trainer and we are getting into the heavy bag, but he doesn't usually have me hit too hard, he's more concerned with speed. I've been playing around with the bag myself, but am thinking I may need some different gloves. Right now I have a pair of lightweight gloves from adidas. They're fine for pad training, but tonight i went at the bag pretty hard by myself for 3 rounds, and I ended up with weird bruising in between my fingers. So....does anyone know what I need to do not to hurt my hands? Different gloves? Or do I need to tape...?? I like to hit hard sometimes, and I really don't wanna hurt my wrists or hands....any advice???
Hand wraps? No...I have mostly been doing lighter pad training, and there was no need to wrap I guess. But I've started on the heavy bag, and during training he usually has me not hit as hard. I would rather do it the right way if I'm going to do it so I thought I'd ask! I don't know anything about wraps...what are they and where would I get them? Do you mean tape? Or are there some sort of slide on wraps? (neither of which I have ever used) I am really starting to love boxing, so I'd like to learn as much as I can! Thank you!!!

+ 1 for hand wraps. For the six months or so that I was semi-serious into boxing (and may be getting back into it in the near future), I could hit the heavy bag with wraps ONLY and not bruise, but in gloves with no wraps, bruising.

You need to wear\sweaty up the mexican's a little before they're comfortable.

My trainer is an amateur MMA fighter, and the boxing we do was just something I requested since I was interested in it. I eventually dropped weight training with him since I now do it on my own, but I would like to get more into the boxing. It was a weight loss tool at first, but now I find that I really just love hitting stuff...

Yeah...my "gloves" are pretty pathetic at this point. Especially if I hit the bag after a bad day at work...
Wraps are good, but not really necessary if your not throwing full powershots (unless you are having some wrist support issues then wrapping would solve this).
I would invest in a good set of 14-16oz gloves. More padding to protect your hands.
Any of the top brands would do, Everlast, Grant, Title, Fairtex. I would definitely go with leather over synthetic. And you want "hook and loop" not lace up.
That's exactly what happened with me. I thought I'd try out a class as a different way of doing 'cardio' and I was hooked on the first day!
I have knees that act up so I was looking for alternative ways to get in some cardio, and my trainer was into boxing so I watched him train and was inspired. It's fantastic for stress...especially if you have a particular photo to tape to the bag...j/k! I was always the one who wanted to hit everything hard...they never let me play tennis because I didn't get it...lol.
When I was in softball in High School, I played home plate and it was awesome...except most of the girls I "stopped" usually cried...wussies...LOL!

They're hook and loop but they're only 10oz...maybe I can return them?...They look to be far better than the ones I have now tho...maybe they will do???

Ko's would offer more protection. For the price that you paid it might be worth seeing if you could cancel out. Worst case you can give them a go and see if you like them. I've got a similar set and do OK but very rarely *really* hit it. 60-80% is about normal depending on what's going on.
The wraps are pretty much insurance. For $5, you have additional support on your hands\thumb\wrist. Maybe it's worth it to you, maybe not. It's a pretty small investment, and you look cool when you're putting them on. Isn't that what it's all "really" about?

Also if you plan on sparring (if you get kind of serious) , its nice to have a seperate set of gloves for sparring, and another set for bag/pad work.

Yeah I think I'll try the ones I ordered and see how they go...the wraps will make me feel a lot better...something is better than nothing, and like I said my wussy gloves really do nothing for me in terms of support, they're really just for speed in pad training. For such a small price it's worth the extra protection to me. The last thing I wanna do is hurt myself...I'd much rather hurt someone else...
Lol...looking cool when putting them on would be a bonus...but there's usually nobody there to see me, the bag's in the back of the spin room! Plus...not too many of the guys in our gym would probably take me all that seriously...unless they've seen my RDL's...
Newbie to the forums here. As Ko67 said....14-16oz gloves are a good idea for you when hitting the heavy bag. They do provide extra padding for protection, but also a little extra weight to add to your conditioning. I used to train Muay Thai before and those few extra ounces made it a lil more challenging to keep my hands up consistently after a couple rounds of pad work.
I can return the ones I bought, I am ordering the ones KO suggested! I am looking forward to the challenge during the pad training, the gloves I have now are so damn light...it's time for a challenge and a change. Thanks!!

I'm late to the discussion, but always, always, always wrap your hands. People are often surprised at how easily the hands can be injured when striking hard surfaces; I prefer to have a little too much protection than too little.
