Default losing fat but not inches?

Hey All
Newbie am interested in starting the NROLW but for the moment here is my problem

Went into the gym today to get weighed and get BF % before i start on a new regime and am highly confused by my results and was hoping someone could shed some light?!

Backtrack: for the last 7 days ( am on my 8th) i have been doing the the lemonade master cleanse so no food just what i have to do on the detox

I have also been doing Bikram yoga daily for the same amount of time

when i last had my weight done this is what it was:

09/07/08
Body weight: 61.4kg
Fat %: 22.6
Fat weight: 13.9kg
Lean muscle weight: 47.5kg
Waist: 27inch
Hips 36.5

today it is:
28/07/08
Body Weight: 60.0kg
Fat%: 15.4
Fat weight: 9.2kg
Lean Muscle weight: 50.8
Waist: 27inch ( goal is 25)
Hips 36.5 (goal 34)

so how the hell have i not manged to lose an inch of my body??!!

my instinct is telling me when i finish the cleanse is to keep my calories at maintenance, and focus on weights to get rid of inches, dropping cals if weight creeps up too much

Is this right?

All help appreciated,

For goodness sake, stop doing this.

You're welcome.

Well, at first glance I would say the method of measuring your BF is way off. There is no way you lost over 7% body fat in 2 1/2 weeks and gained over 7 lbs of lean mass. You lost about 3 lbs of weight -- probably some water from the fast, too. My guess would be that your BF% is relatively the same. But, it's hard to say what's going on with measurements during a crazy fast.

the machine at the gym is called Tanita Body Composition Analyzer
Tanita Body Composition Analyzers/Scales

so i'd hope its pretty accurate, it also give a water weight which the lady at the gym said was fine?

I agree with that. One, or both of your BF readings is wrong. What method was used?

You didn't lose 7% bf in that small period of time!!! Not possible unless maybe you're a decomposing corpse. Tanita's are horribly inaccurate.

The kind of fast you're doing can be dangerous - I strongly advise eating a balanced diet - start with one that involves FOOD. Read the boards here and see what people are doing (TNT, 40/30/30, etc)... don't starve yourself!!! Not safe, not healthy. Pick an EATING plan (key word - EATING).

If you want spiritual cleansing, great - but you don't have to do a "lemonade master cleanse" to find your spiritual side.

Yikes!

Ok, thanks for the advice, i will be following a healthy eating plan, ONCE i've finished my fast,

Plan to follow BFFM, but just to clarify the scales used are inaccurate ?

I have Skin fold capilers, but have never used them, i assume this would be a good alternative, if so how would i use them properly?

BFFM? Not sure what that stands for...

Scales or any bioelectric impedance measures are horribly inaccurate. Some people use 'em for trends but MUST use them at the exact same time every day (or week) and with the same level of hydration (ie: wake up, pee, measure).

The best way to use calipers is to find an experienced trainer or exercise physiologist to measure you with good (read: calibrated) calipers.

Sorry to make you answer the same question twice, we posted at the same time.

My experience with that type of machine is that they are reasonably consistant if it's just you using the machine. In a gym, you have to enter parameters for each person like age, sex, height, etc and perhaps something didn't get entered in correctly. You should verify the reading with some other type of measurement, like calipers or even measurements. If you don't get roughly the same readings you know they are suspect.

I assume that's "Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle" by Tom Venuto. Good choice.

Stu: yeah, still reading through it but it makes sense, like the idea of dropping only 20% of maintenance calories and use exercise to burn the rest off

Default Not Losing Inches

I agree with the others in that the device being used to measure your BF must be inaccurate.
This is not something uncommon. We get questions and concerns in regard to this all the time.
You need to get your BF done with either calibers or hydro. These are both affordable means and also they are usually easily obtained in most cities.
You definitely want to have some before numbers so that you can track the progress that you are making. BF, Girth Measurements and also take a before pic.
The other reply's that you are getting have been great!
Get after it and please keep us posted.
