Default Does a cycling commute defeat resistance training?

Hi all,

I'm looking at getting back to the bench for a 3 day/week resistance program, most likely TBT or Beach Muscles.

I cycle to work (~10-12 miles return) each day. While the intensity of the ride does vary, I'd say it's closer to steady state, and definitely not HIIT. An average commute.

My question is:
Does this cycling defeat the purpose of a hypertrophy program? If so, does it do so to such an extent that I should just follow a fat-loss resistance program until I'm not cycling anymore (that means November - I live in Winnipeg, Canada), and then switch over to more of a hypertrophy-oriented program? Or will a regular commute not interfere with muscle growth?
I realize I'll have to adjust my calorie intake b/c of the commute.

I'm 35, haven't worked out steadily for ~ 5 months.

I just want to make sure all my ships are sailing in the same direction.

Thanks for the help!

You're risking not getting enough calories for muscle growth. Since you realize this, up your calories or stop commuting.

You will get used to a regular amount of exercise, so you'll be fine if you eat enough to grow.

The absolute biggest strongest guy in my gym is an avid cyclist. So I must agree that as long as you eat properly you will be good to go.

I bike to work everyday, oftentimes two trips a day, and while there am on my feet training people for hours.

And I still manage to grow and get stronger.

Come to think of it I've seen athletes running on a field or cycling around a track, and they train and somehow have a good amount of muscle. double

Don't fall for the old bodybuilder better not walk around the block or you won't grow bullshit.
