Crossfit usually does their swings to overhead. They claim it increases power production. Most kettlebell swings are done to about eye level. Since the DB Swing is a variation on the kettlebell swing, it's up to you to decide what type you want to do.

Anyone know what the target muscles are for the dumbbell swings (the one from Weight Training and Body Building - Exercises of a True Physical Culture that someone posted) including the stabilizers and such? Looks like something I may want to try. Is this considered a hip dominant exercise by the way?

Before going to that website, I thought 'dumbbell swings" met swinging from side to side holding the dumbbell or medicine ball out in front of you arms extended (like a torso twist)

Luckily I have K-bells, which make swings much easier.

Dude, what good is having a ton of muscle if you can't actually use it for anything? Swings are a great exercise for strengthening the posterior chain. But I understand... Some people just prefer leg curls I guess.

Just think back to that day that I put you through exactly 1.5 minutes of my functional band stuff in my gym. The people who can keep that up for 30-45 minutes are ripped to shreds, and their joints aren't ready to blow from spending all their workouts at the bench press station.

So far I've used it in my daily heavy object-moving at work. Plus, it keeps you away from fights. It's always the smaller people getting into fights. Plus the women I'm around likes big guys, etc.

Was hell on my lungs. Did nothing for my muscles. It would be great aerobic conditioning, no doubt. Oh, and still would kick my anaerobic ass. I've got no join problems since I stretch and hey-

Don't clump me with the losers that spend all day curling and benching.

Trying to avoid a "functional" debate (God knows I've had my share on T-nation), haha.

Come to the dark side, JP.

I like swings and have used them as a finisher or as part of a metabolic complex. They're fun, too.

It seems to me that is a problem that is corrected with supplements, not gym time.
