Question: I read in a magazine that gymnastics training was good for bone health. Is there any evidence to support this?
fficeffice" /> Answer: There is evidence to support this claim. A study conducted by Nichols et. al. examined the effects of 27 wk of gymnastics training on bone mineral density, and a few other measurements. The researchers concluded gymnasts had significantly higher BMDs than controls, and a significant increase in lumbar BMD was seen in gymnasts following 27 wk of training. Zanker et. al. investigated the effects of regular high-impact and weight-bearing activity before the age of 7 years on total and regional bone mineral density. Zanker found that gymnastics training before the age of 7 years enhances the acquisition of bone mass at selected skeletal sites.
I was under the strong impression that the opposite was true. I can remember in HS physiology learning about how many competitive gymnasts (who are very young, often in the early teens) keep their weight, and particularly bf% so low that they become amenstral, and calcium leaches rapidly from their bones. Almost like a teenage form of osteoperosis.

Being in gymnastics, it happens that some of girls develop eating disorders which is what causes the above mentioned ailments.

wow... i cannot believe the physiques of male gymnasts, or the strength involved. Kudos to you!
Well at 18 I was 140lbs at 5'9 so I wouldnt say that the physique was all that. Most of the elite guys are like 5'5 and 135lbs or so. Its easy to look jacked when youre that short.
