Hey Eric,
Great book. I read it cover to cover last night. I really like the soft tissue recommendations. I can't wait to start trying that.
Anyway,I've got a question for you. Regarding the 'foundation' part of the program, I see that you have pushups on the Saturday workout. Are these meant to only be BW pushups, to work on form maybe, or could I wear my 50 lb weight vest to add some resistance? Also, for week 3 of the foundation month, we are doing 8x3 for bench press. Is this done with a 3RM or more like a 5 or 6RM?
Thanks,
Ian

I think both questions can be answered by several references in the book to doing as much weight as you can to complete the required reps in the set. Another lifter who has worked with Eric told me to adjust subsequent sets based upon the previous set. Most of the time I do a slight deload on subsequent sets but a few times I added because the first set was too easy.
Maybe pushups are more for form in which case I would consider doing them with a weight lighter than your 50lb vest (can you PM me with where you got it?).
I assume that the scap push-ups, which are not only part of warm-up but also part of Phase 2 - Saturday, should be done without weights. I could see using no weights for the warm-up version but I would like to try a light weight or possibly use a band to add a slight amount of resistance but not too much to affect the intent of the movement.

I would not use additional weight for the scap push-ups, just focus on perfecting the technique. If you want to mix them up a bit so they are different from the warm up you can elevate your legs using a box or bench and do them from there.

Such a great resource, and I see him just about every week when I train.
Eric is so passionate about his work, it is great to be able to talk to him on a regular basis. Any question, concern, etc...he's right there, offering help or advice.
I was at the new Cressey Performance training center today. They just moved to a larger location, literally TODAY. Great place, same awesome instruction and training environment.
Eric gave me an autographed copy of Maximum Strength last week! Lucky me! I have read most of it, and it's great.
Buy the book, you will not be disappointed!

I went to Borders yesterday and flipped through a copy for about 30 minutes. This looks like an absoultley fantastic book!
I am probably going to do it after football season is over.
Eric, is there anything you'd reccommend as far as doing as gaining strength in-season? I want to start the Max. Strength ASAP, but football is a little physically demanding

Just one more question.
My gym doesn't have a chest supported row machine. What is the best, or most similar replacement for this row variation?
-thanks

I've always just used my incline bench and dumbbells.

Hi, new member here.
received the book a few days ago and love it, going to follow the program word for word. Quick qns; in regards to the scapular push-up, is there a lowering phases where the chest almost touches the ground like in a regular push-ups? In the description it says dont unlock elbows, but the picture is different. thanks!

The picture of the scap push-up is incorrect; it was a printing error. Keep your elbows locked out and focus on the scapulae.

By all means, add the weight vest if you can.
For the 8x3, you're looking at more like a 5RM. I'm not against the idea of dropping weight off the bar as you go, though, so it's cool to hit a 3RM and then work backward from that.

Keep it nice and simple:
Day 1: Squat, Single-leg, overhead, Chin-up
Day 2: Deadlift, single-leg, bench, overhead press
Toss in a little core and prehab stuff and you're good to go. We are obviously a lot more in-depth with our in-season stuff, but for all intents and purposes, simplicity is what you need.

For all those who asked, there is a correct video of scap pushups here:

Publisher's mistake on that photo. I wasn't thrilled with it...

Cool. Thanks for the reply Eric. By the way, as you stated in the book, I love the warm ups. Especially the foam rolling. That IT band roll loosens up so much. My body already feels better.

I really like the lacrosse ball on the bottom of the foot and the peroneals. There's an immediate ROM boost.
