Kettlebells: What size(s) to get?
I understand that 16kg is typical for men. What other sizes should I look into just to be able to have KBs for more difficult exercises? For example, I know I can't do a Turkish Get Up with a 16kg KB, so was thinking something smaller might be good to progress with. Thanks in advance for replies.

If you're on a budget, think first of the exercises that you will want to do with the kettlebells.
I don't see a big difference in TGUs (especially at the low weight) with a kb vs a db, while swings and snatches are going to quite a bit different.

Good point Roland - I know I can do two handed swings with a 16kg KB, but snatches I'm not so sure. I'll have to check 'em out.

You should be able to handle a 16kg TGU...try the 16kg, then decide. I doubt you'll want a smaller one. After a few months the real question will probably whether or not to skip the 20kg and go straight to the 24kg.

If your primarily going to be doing swings, snatches, jerks, TGUs etc...then you'd be fine with a 16 and a 24. Or pick up a 24 later if your on a budget.
Once you hit good volume with the 16 you can start doing lower rep work with a 24.

I think 16 is also a good place to start...Then you can increase when you feel comfortable

Thanks for all the suggestions - I decided to go with a pair of 16s for now. As Roland pointed out I think I could use the dumbbells I have if I need lighter weights for some exercises. I also purchased Steve Cotter's Encyclopedia of Kettlebell Lifting Vol. 1, with the idea that I can make the exercises more difficult for added challenge rather than adding weight. Once I get used to them, I'll consider grabbing a pair of 24s. (Wichita Falls Weightlifting has a little discount if you buy the KBs in pairs.)

Performbetter.com has excellent shipping prices. For me, the costs of two 16kg KBs is the same after shipping between the two places.
Perform Better has vinyl coated bells, too. ...if you're into pretty colors.

Hmm, I could've sworn when I priced them out that PerformBetter was a little more expensive... As far as I can tell though they seem to be virtually the same. But the advantage with PerformBetter is not having to buy a pair to get the cheaper price.

Indeed, but since I'd already ordered the pair from Wichita, I'll stick to that, and maybe order a 24 from PerformBetter when I'm ready to upgrade.
