Yeah, trolling is amusing to watch, especially when the troll can't even think of a clever way to bullshit his identity to sustain the masochistic public ass-beating he was getting. But when you take a step back & realize that this is the most attention this kid gets in his life, it's actually pretty sad.
I was going to guess symbolic, but he was much more civil in his trolling.
But, he/she/it has already been banned so I don't get to find out its secret identity. Amazingly, I don't care. I am actually really disappointed because I was really looking forward to some actual debate. Now I just want to delete every post made on this thread from the point that DrPhD started posting just to keep it clean. And all that is assuming that this troll isn't the same person in the email debate with Jamie Hale, in which case I would like to delete the whole thing as nothing irks me more than feeding trolls.
Ok - I gotta say, this was an interesting thread. I don't think I learned much from it, but it's highly entertaining. I was hoping to throw out some questions about interval training and sugar/fat in the beginning, before I realized there was a troll.
This person contacted me by e-mail about two weeks ago. I didn't think much about it at first as this is not abnormal. I receive hate mail about once every 2 days. I responded to the e-mail and about three days later received a response to that e-mail. I destroyed everything this individual was saying. I thought it would make a great article. Yesterday i received two emails informing me that i would be exposed to the world, that humans are not good sprinters compared to some other animals, i had mis-represented the Tremblay study and so on. I responded repeating what i had basically said in the article and previous e-mails. I received an e-mail this morning telling me not to worry i would not be exposed (this was only a figure of speech)
The arguments made by this person are an excellent example of how not to argue. The statements are also a great demo of logical fallacies.
PowermanDL did an excellent job ripping this individual to shreds.
On another note up until yesterday i had not seen the complete study by Tremblay. I referenced the information from the studies abstract and two other Secondary science sources. Five minutes after receiving the email telling me how i had mis-represented the Tremblay study i decided i would review the entire study. I sent out the study request to the research group and i received the study from Dr. Dipasquale about five minutes later. I found that the abstract did a good job of describing the studies findings. Yes, my reports on the Tremblay study were correct.
Forgetting about the "it" for a minute i think the info below will be benefical for some:
from Tremblay et. al. (1994)Impact of Exercise Intensity of Body Fatness and Skeletal Muscle Metabolism:
"In summary the results of the present study show that for
a given level of energy expenditure, a high-intensity training
program induces a greater loss of subcutaneous fat compared
with a training program of moderate intensity. This is
probably explained by an enhancing effect of high-intensity
exercise on postexercise lipid utilization, which favors a
greater body lipid deficit following exercise. From a clinical
standpoint, it is obvious that high-intensity exercise cannot
be prescribed for individuals at risk for health problems or
for obese people who are not used to excrcisc. In these
cases, the most prudent course remains a low-intensity
exercise program with a progressive increase in duration
and frequency of sessions. However, the data reported here
would support the notion that it may be appropriate and
useful to prescribe vigorous exercise instead of lowintensity
exercise of comparable energy cost when this is compatible with the fitness level of the individual."
so wait, is the troll that posted on here the same person that was challenging your work and threatening to expose you? or is it someone that read your initial post and decided if the good doctor wasn't going to post on this forum he would take up the argument (poorly) in her stead? or don't we know? i guess what i am asking is dr. harmony a real person?
i firgured it was a troll when she refferred to ppl as 'fatties' on the first page. i don't think a person with a phd in exercise/ nutrition would publicily say that. its too unprofessional. but it was fun while it lasted and powerman made some great points.

I am not sure who it is, but i think it is the person who has been sending me e-mails. The writing style and repetitive use of logical fallacies are characteristic of the emails i have received.
This person intended on destroying me but failed and decided to go off the deep end. The arguments put forth by this person are great examples of how to not argue.
No you didn't win by submission Jamie. It was just a trolling
BUT I am correct that EPOS only burns an additional 100-200 calories over the next 24 hours
La Forgia J et al Effects of excercise intensity and duration on the excess post excercise oxygen consumption Journal of Sports Science dec 2006 1247-126424 (12)
And I AM correct that cardio done at 75-80 % of max for 45 minutes burns a hell of a lot more calories than HIIT for 15 minutes
and finally research is NOT the be all end all Humans conduct it

This doesn't change the fact that EPOC is still a contributor to a host of mechanisms (enzymatic & other) responsible for increased fat oxidation in between training bouts.

Link me to where anyone in this thread compared this intensity/duration. Strawman fallacy - check.

In this context, research is merely an objective attempt to understand physiological mechanisms. Research is never perfect, but it still beats the hell out of the subjectivity that is bro-opinion.
EPOC does not contribute to fat loss much. When it comes to fat loss it is ALL about calories. You can enhance EPOC by doing more activity . But do not rely mainly on this. If you only going to do HIIT you better really tighten up calorie intake.
I was also correct that walking 2 hours burns a hell of alot more calories then HIIT for 15 minutes.
Southern California is NOT the tropics. The Temperate Zone.
I don't get whether you're serious here or not. You're taking two extremes and pitting them against each other. You would really tell your clients to walk for 2 hours? Most poople work or go to school and don't have (or think they don't have) the time to walk for two hours.
At least compare realistic expectations and recommendations. People are often told to walk or cycle for 45 minutes to an hour. How does that compare to the warmup, interval session, and cooldown that's typically recomended in it's place?
I know for me, I don't have the mental capacity to go for a walk for 2 hours...nor the time ability with a wife, young son and multiple commitments.
Give me a 20 minute HIIT session anytime...better yet, give me a basketball or hockey game for an hour, that will burn way more cals than a boring 2 hour walk and still be considered higher intensity.

No one ever said that EPOC is the predominant mechanism behind increased fat oxidation in the recovery interim between workouts, it is merely a contributor. No one here ever has put the emphasis on EPOC in this discussion, except yourself.

Repeat yourself without reading responses much?

Momentary lapse back into trollville? On a serious note, finishing highschool is GOOD. Hang in there, slugger.
