Default Home vs. Gym - My pertinent question

I've been reading TNROL for the last few days now and i got to a part where I've been told that i need to exercise hard but give plenty of time for my muscles to recover. Somehow, one question popped up in my mind: "I wonder... is it okay to, lets say, do two sets of squats in the morning, some abs mid afternoon, a bench press just before dinner and some deadlifts just before bed?" Well, is it?
This came to mind because i came to the brilliant conclusion that most exercise plans are there for those who go on a gym after work, on the way home, and have to take full advantage of that trip. Since i have a bench and a few free weights at home, do i have to stick to that hour of exercise? Can't i exercise all day round? As long as one leaves the couch...

Thoughts off the top of my head,

I think that you are
1. likely not to work out as hard (since you likely will not warm up for 5-10, to lift for 5-10 min)
2. more prone to injury (see above)
3. not going get the hormonal benefits (for one example see p 211 NROL)
4. not going to "stick with it. The mental "aspect of time discipline, food discipline would be lost in a do it "whenever I feel like it" approach.
5. not going to work out with "intensity" (or at least I could never do it that way)
6. going to need multiple showers a day

MY QUESTION: WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO DO IT THIS WAY?

If you do that, I think you'd be missing out on a lot of progress, but that's just me. (Metabolism and Central Nervous System wouldn't get nearly the workout if you did them as you describe.)

I think diamondpete covered most of it very well.

That's not to say that you're way wouldn't help. Compared to doing nothing, your technique would be a huge leap forward. But compared to a solid hour in the gym, it wouldn't stack up.
